Chapter 10 - The Price of a Name

Thirty seconds appeared on every relay screen in the warehouse.

The numbers glowed red through rain and smoke.

00:29.

Celeste ran toward Miranda's suspended container.

Reed held Elena against the catwalk while blood soaked the sleeve of his uniform.

Arthur remained beside the manual winch, his palms torn open.

Julian stood near the dock rail with the relay trigger in his hand.

"You can stop it," Celeste said.

Julian wiped blood from his mouth.

"Of course."

00:24.

"Release the network."

"Give me the command codes."

"You will die too."

Julian looked toward the river.

A black speedboat moved beneath the dock, nearly invisible in the storm.

A rope ladder hung from its stern.

He had planned an exit.

"Some of us prepare for consequences," he said.

Celeste fired at the boat.

The driver swerved behind a concrete piling.

Julian jumped over the rail.

He caught the rope ladder and disappeared beneath the dock.

00:19.

Celeste reached Arthur.

"The units share a root certification key."

Arthur struggled to stand.

"English."

"One master authority can revoke the network."

Arthur looked toward the old study.

"My father's console."

They ran inside.

Miranda climbed from the container onto the crane maintenance ladder while two operators moved toward her.

Reed secured Elena's wrists with one hand.

She watched the countdown without fear.

"He will not do it," she said.

Reed pressed her against the rail.

"Do what?"

"Destroy the name."

Inside the study, Arthur opened a hidden panel beneath the desk.

A brass key slot appeared beside a small monochrome screen.

He inserted the signet key.

The console asked for a spoken authorization.

00:14.

"Arthur Edmund Warren," he said.

The screen displayed three options.

SUSPEND LOCAL NETWORK.

TRANSFER ROOT AUTHORITY.

PERMANENTLY REVOKE WARREN DEFENSE CERTIFICATION.

Celeste pointed to the third.

"That will disable every relay."

Arthur read the warning beneath it.

Permanent revocation would invalidate every active Warren Maritime defense certificate worldwide.

Ships would lose encrypted communication access.

Contracts would freeze automatically.

The company's military division would become legally unusable until a full federal recertification.

The process could take years.

The stock would collapse within minutes.

00:10.

Arthur's finger hovered over the control.

"There must be another way."

Celeste stared at him.

The warehouse lights flashed around them.

Miranda clung to a ladder above black water.

Reed bled on the catwalk.

Operators ran between explosive relay units.

Arthur was still searching for a solution that preserved the company.

"This is the way," Celeste said.

00:07.

Arthur saw Noah's letter on the desk where he had placed it.

He saw the words through rain blown in from the broken window.

He knows about Rome.

He knows what you did for Miranda.

He will use love because he does not understand it.

Arthur finally understood the sentence applied to more than Julian.

Arthur had also used love without understanding it.

He had offered protection only when it did not threaten his pride.

He had valued his daughters so long as they reflected him correctly.

00:05.

Celeste reached for the control.

Arthur stopped her.

"My name did this."

He pressed PERMANENTLY REVOKE.

The console requested confirmation.

00:03.

"Confirm," Arthur said.

"Voice authorization requires declaration of liability."

Arthur closed his eyes.

00:02.

"I, Arthur Edmund Warren, accept full responsibility for the actions executed under Warren Maritime certification."

00:01.

The relay screens went black.

Silence filled the warehouse.

No explosion came.

Rain struck the roof.

Miranda began laughing and crying at the same time.

Celeste looked at Arthur.

He removed the signet key from the console.

The Warren crest had split along one edge from the pressure of the mechanism.

"It is done," he said.

His voice sounded empty.

"The company is finished."

Celeste looked through the study window at the people still alive.

"The company is not a person."

Arthur followed her gaze.

For once, he did not argue.

Federal teams flooded the warehouse.

Miranda was lowered safely to the dock.

She ran toward Celeste, then stopped several feet away.

The hesitation was honest.

She did not know whether she had the right to embrace her sister.

Celeste closed the distance and held her.

Miranda's body shook.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I know."

"That is not enough."

"No."

Celeste held her anyway.

Arthur watched them from the study doorway.

He had spent years dividing his daughters into roles.

Celeste was difficult.

Miranda was loyal.

Now Celeste was the one carrying Miranda out of danger, and Miranda was the one admitting fault.

The roles collapsed because they had never been real.

Reed brought Elena down from the catwalk.

She smiled at Arthur's broken signet ring.

"Your father would be ashamed."

Arthur met her eyes.

"He often was."

"You destroyed three generations of work."

"No."

Arthur looked at the disabled relay units.

"I stopped protecting it."

Elena's smile faded.

She had expected ruin to break him.

Instead, it had removed the language she used to control him.

A federal agent led her away.

Reed approached Celeste.

"Julian escaped by water."

"He will need access to another root system."

"He lost Warren certification."

"That was not the only network Ashfall touched."

Reed understood.

The twelve intelligence officers rescued in Vezda had carried codes linking private shipping fleets, military ports, and autonomous navigation systems.

Julian had spent eighteen months gathering pieces.

Warren Maritime was one door.

It was not the final door.

Arthur heard them.

"What can he do?"

Celeste looked toward the river.

"Move ships no one believes he controls."

Within minutes, the financial consequences began.

Warren Maritime stock dropped forty percent before trading was halted.

Defense agencies suspended every active contract.

News networks reported that Arthur Warren had personally revoked the company's certification during a terrorist attack.

Commentators called it confession, panic, sabotage, and heroism in equal measure.

Arthur ignored the screens.

Paramedics wrapped his hands.

Miranda sat beside him with a blanket around her shoulders.

Celeste stood near Reed while agents searched the river.

For a brief moment, the family occupied the same room without pretending it was whole.

Then two black federal vehicles entered the warehouse.

A woman in a dark suit stepped out.

Special Inspector Mara Kincaid headed the Defense Security Review Office.

She carried a sealed warrant.

Reed's expression hardened as soon as he saw her.

"This is fast," he said.

"Too fast," Celeste replied.

Kincaid approached with six armed agents.

"Commander Celeste Warren?"

Celeste stepped forward.

"Yes."

"You are being detained under the National Security Protection Act."

Arthur stood.

"For what?"

Kincaid handed Reed a copy of the warrant.

"Unauthorized release of classified operational footage, theft of command codes, and conspiracy to compromise defense communications."

Miranda stared at her.

"She was the target."

"New evidence indicates otherwise."

Kincaid opened a tablet.

The screen showed a bank account in Celeste's name receiving payments from Orion Strategic.

It showed messages arranging the ballroom attack.

It showed Celeste's command credentials accessing the Ashfall video archive three hours before the leak.

The evidence was perfect.

That made Celeste certain it was false.

Reed read the warrant.

"These credentials were sealed."

"Commander Warren had access."

"So did the review office."

Kincaid's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful, Admiral."

Arthur looked from the evidence to Celeste.

For one terrible second, doubt returned to his face.

Celeste saw it.

The pain was quieter than the scars and deeper than either.

Arthur realized what she had seen.

"I believe her," he said.

The words came late.

They still came.

Kincaid signaled her agents.

Celeste surrendered her weapon and held out her wrists.

"Do not resist," Reed warned.

"I was not planning to."

The restraints closed around her hands.

Miranda moved toward Kincaid.

"Julian Vale created those records."

"Mr. Vale is currently listed as missing and presumed endangered."

Elena laughed from the nearby transport vehicle.

Everyone turned.

She leaned toward the barred window.

"You still think Julian works for me."

Celeste looked at her.

Elena's eyes gleamed with something close to admiration.

"He learned from all of us, Commander."

The transport door closed.

Kincaid led Celeste toward the federal vehicle.

Arthur followed until an agent blocked him.

"Celeste."

She turned.

He searched for something worthy to say.

An apology was too small.

A promise would be unbelievable.

"I will find the truth," he said.

Celeste looked at his bandaged hands.

"Then look where you refused to look before."

The vehicle door closed between them.

As the convoy pulled away, Arthur received a message from Julian's number.

A photograph appeared on his phone.

It showed Celeste in the back of the federal vehicle, taken seconds earlier from above.

Julian was watching the convoy.

Beneath the image were four words.
