CHAPTER 2: The Room That Remembers

The storm outside intensified, rattling the grand windows of the Pedregal mansion as if the house itself wanted to escape what it contained.

Arturo took a step back—not away from Lupita, but away from Constanza.

“For how long?” he asked.

No one answered quickly enough.

That was the second betrayal.

Carmen finally spoke, voice hollow. “Since before your marriage.”

The words landed like a slow collapse of stone.

Constanza turned sharply. “You don’t get to speak.”

But Carmen didn’t stop.

“She was fifteen when Constanza brought her in,” Carmen said. “She said it was temporary. Safe. Hidden.”

Lupita’s breathing turned uneven, memories pushing through the cracks.

“I didn’t even know what place I was in,” she whispered. “I just knew I wasn’t allowed to leave.”

Arturo’s gaze dropped to the photograph again.

The infant.

The severed hand.

Now it wasn’t just horror—it was recognition without permission.

His voice dropped. “And the child?”

Lupita flinched as if the word itself hurt.

“I was told she died,” she said. “Minutes after birth. They never let me see her.”

A beat of silence.

Then Carmen whispered, almost to herself:

“She didn’t die.”

Constanza’s expression finally shifted.

Not fear.

Annoyance.

Like a carefully arranged structure had finally stopped obeying her.

“You all speak like ghosts are facts,” she said coldly. “There was no child. There was a problem. And I solved it.”

Arturo’s head snapped toward her. “Solved it?”

For the first time, his voice broke through control.

Constanza met his eyes.

May you like

And smiled slightly.

“You built your empire on cleaner lies than this.”
