CHAPTER 1: The Name Beneath the Storm

The word hung in the air like a live wire.
“…Mine.”
Lupita’s knees nearly gave out as soon as it left her mouth. She didn’t cry yet—her body seemed to have forgotten how. Only her hands shook, clenched tightly in the wet fabric of her apron.
Arturo stared at her.
Not with anger first.
With disbelief so complete it almost looked like emptiness.
“Yours,” he repeated slowly, as if testing whether language itself had broken. “What do you mean—yours?”
Constanza let out a quiet, cutting breath. “This is absurd.”
But Carmen had already stepped forward, her voice breaking apart at the edges.
“Don’t do this,” she begged Lupita. “Not now. Not after all these years.”
That sentence changed the room.
Arturo’s eyes snapped to Carmen. “All these years?”
The relic in his hand slipped slightly. He tightened his grip instinctively, as if holding it harder could force reality back into order.
Lupita finally looked up.
Her voice was small—but steady enough to fracture everything.
“I gave birth to her.”
Silence didn’t follow this time.
It collapsed.
Constanza moved first. A sharp step forward, silk whispering like a threat.
“That’s impossible,” she said. “You were sixteen. You were—”
“Hidden,” Lupita interrupted, and for the first time there was something like steel beneath her fear. “I was hidden in this house.”
Carmen closed her eyes like she had been waiting years for impact.
Arturo turned slowly toward Constanza now, the realization forming in him like a wound opening.
“You told me she was just a maid,” he said.
May you like
Constanza didn’t answer.
And in that absence, everything became an answer.
