Chapter 9 - The Red Box

The red box contained no financial records.
It contained Samuel's life.
School reports, medical files, private letters, photographs taken through apartment windows, and transcripts of conversations he never knew had been recorded filled the folders.
At the bottom lay a psychiatric assessment signed by Dr. Weston when Samuel was twelve.
The report described episodes of aggression, hallucinations, and hereditary instability.
None of it was true.
Daria had created the diagnosis decades earlier as insurance.
If Samuel ever challenged her, she could have him declared incompetent.
The emergency board meeting relied on those same records.
Catherine found a second folder labeled SUCCESSION EVENT.
Inside was a schedule beginning the night of her abduction.
Stage One: Remove spouse.
Stage Two: Establish grief impairment.
Stage Three: Introduce controlled companion.
Stage Four: Secure reproductive incapacity.
Samuel read the last line twice.
Daria had arranged for him to undergo a minor surgical procedure during the months after Catherine's supposed death.
Weston called it treatment for an old athletic injury.
The records showed an additional unauthorized procedure intended to make Samuel infertile.
The operation failed.
Samuel remembered waking in pain and accepting Weston's explanation.
His mother had not only stolen his wife and daughter.
She had attempted to end his bloodline while pretending to care for him.
Catherine placed a hand over his.
He wanted to break something.
Instead, he closed the box.
"We use all of it."
The archive gave prosecutors leverage over judges, police officers, executives, and medical professionals.
Some were willing participants.
Others had been blackmailed for years.
Arrests began before dawn.
The Kincaid board suspended Daria and appointed Samuel temporary chairman.
He refused the position.
"Catherine is trustee under the original will."
The directors resisted.
They argued that Catherine was traumatized, legally dead, and unprepared.
Catherine entered the meeting carrying Penelope.
She wore a dark blue suit borrowed from Ortiz and no makeup over her scars.
The room fell silent.
"You discussed my fitness while accepting orders from the woman who kidnapped me," she said.
"Let us begin with yours."
She produced evidence showing that three directors had approved transfers into Daria's shell companies.
Two resigned immediately.
One attempted to leave and was arrested outside the room.
Lucian attended by video from the hospital.
He withdrew his claim and announced that he would testify against Daria.
Arthur watched from beside his bed.
For the first time in twenty years, father and son spoke without anger.
The company's control passed provisionally to the Penelope Trust.
Catherine became acting trustee.
Samuel remained chief executive only at her discretion.
Daria's attorneys called it humiliation.
Samuel called it justice.
The victory lasted three hours.
Then the hospital reported that Dr. Weston had been found dead in federal custody.
The preliminary cause was poisoning.
A message had been written on the wall of his cell in his own blood.
SHE DOES NOT WORK ALONE.
Ortiz believed Weston had written it before collapsing.
Daria had been under constant surveillance.
She could not have delivered the poison herself.
The archive listed hundreds of compromised people, but one name appeared more frequently than the rest.
Malcolm Reeve.
The family attorney had arranged trusts, identities, medical payments, and transportation.
He had also been present at the cemetery before Daria arrived.
Reeve had vanished from the hospital during the chapel raid.
Security footage showed a nurse wheeling him into an elevator.
The nurse was never identified.
Catherine returned to the red box.
A sealed envelope had been taped beneath the lining.
It was addressed in Thomas Kincaid's handwriting.
TO CATHERINE, IF SAMUEL CHOOSES THE TRUTH.
Inside was a key and a map of the mansion's foundation.
Thomas wrote that Daria was dangerous but not original.
Someone had taught her the system.
Someone had profited before she did.
The map marked a room beneath the oldest section of Kincaid House.
Arthur had never heard of it.
May you like
Samuel recognized the location.
It lay directly beneath the nursery where his mother had raised him.
