Chapter 4 - Blackthorn House

Agent Ortiz drove without headlights until the mansion disappeared behind the trees.

Samuel sat in the back with Catherine and Penelope, trying to understand how his wife had returned with a federal agent waiting nearby.

Ortiz spoke before he could ask.

"Blackthorn House has been under investigation for seven months."

"For kidnapping?"

"For illegal detention, identity fraud, financial coercion, and at least three suspicious deaths."

Catherine watched the road through the rear window.

"They were close to moving me again."

Ortiz explained that Catherine had smuggled a note to a delivery driver three months earlier.

The driver ignored it.

His teenage daughter found it in his truck and posted a photograph online.

The message contained only five words and a set of coordinates.

PATIENT SEVEN IS CATHERINE KINCAID.

A federal analyst connected the name to the supposedly deceased wife of a prominent businessman.

Ortiz had then spent months building a case without alerting local officers who might be compromised.

"Why did you let her come to the mansion?" Samuel demanded.

"Because Catherine insisted."

"She had a baby with her."

"I know exactly what she risked."

Catherine's voice remained calm.

"The records are inside Kincaid House."

Samuel turned toward her.

"What records?"

"Your mother kept copies of every payment because she never trusted Weston."

Daria stored them in a private archive behind the family chapel.

Catherine had seen the entrance during one of Daria's visits to Blackthorn, when Daria displayed photographs to prove that Samuel had moved on.

One photograph showed Daria standing beside the chapel wall with an open steel cabinet behind her.

"You went to the mansion to make her open the archive," Samuel said.

"I went to make her panic."

Ortiz nodded.

"Panic creates movement. Movement creates evidence."

Samuel looked down at Penelope.

"You could have told me."

Catherine's eyes flashed.

"I did not know if I could trust you."

The words hurt more than he expected.

"I spent two years looking for you."

"And your mother spent thirty-five years teaching you to doubt anyone who challenged her."

Samuel wanted to deny it.

He remembered every argument in which he had asked Catherine to be patient with Daria.

He remembered telling Catherine that his mother was difficult but loyal.

He remembered the night Catherine accused Daria of manipulating the board, and Samuel asked whether grief over his father's death had made her paranoid.

Catherine had been right.

Samuel had defended the woman destroying her.

"You are right," he said.

Catherine looked away.

Ortiz drove them to a federal safe house in an abandoned ranger station.

Inside, two agents examined the tracking device and photographed Catherine's injuries.

A doctor checked Penelope and reported dehydration, mild malnutrition, and no immediate danger.

Samuel stood outside the examination room while guilt pressed down on him.

Catherine emerged wearing dry clothes provided by the agents.

Without the torn coat, she seemed even thinner.

"I need to tell you something before we go further," she said.

"Anything."

"There was another child at Blackthorn."

Samuel's face changed.

Catherine described a six-year-old boy named Noah who had been kept in a room across from hers.

His mother had been a Kincaid accountant who discovered the shell companies.

She died in what the police called a house fire.

Noah had witnessed something the kidnappers feared he might remember.

"He is still there."

Ortiz entered behind them.

"Our team is preparing a warrant."

Catherine shook her head.

"Weston will move him the moment Daria calls."

Ortiz checked her watch.

"The warrant should clear within thirty minutes."

"He does not have thirty minutes."

Samuel understood the look in Catherine's eyes.

"You want to go back."

"I promised him I would."

Ortiz refused at first.

Then a signal from the tracker showed movement at Blackthorn House.

Three vehicles had left the estate.

One remained.

"They are cleaning it," Catherine said.

Samuel took his coat.

"Then we reach the boy before they erase him too."

The raid began in a blizzard.

Agents approached Blackthorn through the woods while Samuel remained in an armored vehicle with Catherine.

Gunfire cracked near the east fence.

The radio erupted with overlapping commands.

Ortiz's team entered the main building and found empty rooms, stripped beds, and burning files in a furnace.

There was no child.

Catherine grabbed the radio.

"Check below the kitchen."

An agent answered that the basement was clear.

"Not the basement."

Catherine closed her eyes, reconstructing the sound she had heard every night.

"There is a second floor beneath it. The freezer motor covers the elevator."

Agents found the hidden switch inside a meat locker.

The elevator descended into a concrete level not shown on any blueprint.

Noah was discovered inside a medical room, sedated but alive.

Beside his bed sat a metal case filled with blood samples labeled with family names.

One label read PENELOPE KINCAID.

Another read SAMUEL KINCAID.

The last label made Ortiz stop speaking.

THOMAS KINCAID — CARDIAC STUDY.

Thomas was Samuel's father.

The sample had been collected two days before he died.
