Chapter 10: Audrey's Secret

Chapter 10: Audrey's Secret
The security footage replayed in complete silence.
11:48 p.m.

Audrey Vance stepped through the executive garage entrance wearing a dark raincoat with the hood pulled over her hair. She paused only long enough to swipe an executive security card before disappearing into the private elevator.
No hesitation.
No struggle.
No one forcing her inside.
She had walked into Vance Maritime headquarters on her own.
Emily watched the clip three times.
Each viewing raised more questions than answers.
"Run it again," she said.
The forensic analyst rewound the footage.
This time Emily ignored Audrey.
Instead, she studied the reflection in the polished elevator doors.
Just before they closed...
Another figure appeared.
A tall man wearing a maintenance uniform.
His face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.
The doors shut before the cameras captured him completely.
Emily pointed at the screen.
"Freeze it."
The analyst enlarged the reflection.
Blurry.
Distorted.
But one detail remained unmistakable.
The man wore black leather gloves.
On the right glove...
A silver ring shaped like a chess knight.
Emily reached into her pocket and removed the silver coin recovered from the server room.
The knight symbol matched perfectly.
"The same organization," Mercer murmured.
Emily nodded.
"They wanted us to focus on Audrey."
"So we'd miss him."
Forty-Five Minutes Earlier...
Rain hammered the windshield as Audrey parked beneath the executive garage.
Her hands trembled on the steering wheel.
The burner phone lay silent on the passenger seat.
Its screen had gone black forever after the final countdown.
She looked toward the headquarters entrance.
For several long seconds, she couldn't make herself move.
Then the dashboard lit up.
An incoming call.
Unknown number.
She answered.
"I came."
A woman's calm voice filled the car.
"I know."
"I did exactly what you said."
"You've done well."
Audrey swallowed.
"My father?"
"He's no longer important."
"And Emily?"
A pause.
"She'll be here soon."
Fear tightened Audrey's chest.
"What do you want from me?"
The woman's answer was immediate.
"The truth."
Present Time.
Emily closed the laptop.
"We're missing something."
Eleanor stood near the vault entrance, arms folded tightly across her chest.
"Audrey was never capable of planning something this complicated."
Arthur looked up.
"She's right."
Emily frowned.
"You believe her?"
Arthur nodded slowly.
"Audrey lies."
He looked toward the security footage.
"But she doesn't think three moves ahead."
Mercer smiled faintly.
"Whoever planned tonight does."
A technician hurried into the archive carrying another evidence box.
"We recovered this from the executive elevator."
Inside lay a gold bracelet.
Emily recognized it instantly.
Audrey had worn it to the gala.
The clasp was broken.
A tiny smear of blood marked the inside.
Mercer carefully examined it.
"Someone grabbed her."
Emily looked toward the elevator diagram.
"If she came willingly..."
"...she didn't leave willingly."
Meanwhile...
Three miles away.
Audrey slowly regained consciousness.
Everything around her blurred.
Concrete ceiling.
Metal chair.
Single hanging light bulb.
Cold air.
She tried to move.
Her wrists were tied.
Her ankles secured.
Not painfully.
Professionally.
Someone knew exactly how to restrain a prisoner without causing injury.
A voice echoed from the darkness.
"I was beginning to think you'd never wake up."
Audrey looked up.
A woman stepped into the light.
Mid-sixties.
Silver hair.
Impeccable posture.
Dark navy suit.
No jewelry except a small silver brooch shaped like...
A chess knight.
Audrey's heartbeat accelerated.
"You..."
The woman smiled politely.
"We've never officially met."
"But I've watched you grow up."
Audrey's voice shook.
"Who are you?"
The woman ignored the question.
Instead, she pulled another chair across the floor and sat opposite her.
"You've spent your entire life trying to earn Arthur Vance's approval."
Audrey looked away.
"You never realized..."
The woman continued softly.
"...that he was trying to protect you."
Back at headquarters, Emily entered Arthur's office alone.
She needed quiet.
Needed space to think.
The room looked almost untouched despite the break-in.
Family photographs lined one bookshelf.
Awards covered another.
She rarely looked at them as a child.
Now...
One frame caught her attention.
A picture from nearly thirty years ago.
Arthur stood beside Eleanor during the company's groundbreaking ceremony.
Behind them stood six other people.
Investors.
Board members.
Friends.
Emily studied each face carefully.
Then her eyes stopped on one woman.
Elegant.
Gray hair.
Confident smile.
Wearing a silver brooch.
A chess knight.
Emily's pulse quickened.
She removed the photograph from its frame.
On the back, someone had written eight names.
The seventh had been crossed out.
The eighth remained.
Victoria Ashcroft
Emily whispered the name aloud.
Eleanor stepped into the office just in time to hear it.
She froze.
"No..."
Emily turned.
"You know her."
Eleanor's expression hardened.
"I hoped she was dead."
"Who is she?"
Eleanor slowly took the photograph.
"She recruited your father."
Emily felt the pieces beginning to connect.
"The Consortium."
Eleanor nodded.
"She helped build it."
Mercer entered moments later.
"We just identified the knight symbol."
Everyone looked at him.
"It doesn't represent a company."
He placed an intelligence file on the desk.
"It represents the organization's governing council."
"How many members?"
Mercer answered quietly.
"Seven."
Emily looked down at the photograph again.
Eight people.
One crossed out.
Seven remaining.
Her eyes widened.
"The founding council."
Mercer nodded.
"Exactly."
At the same moment...
Audrey stared across the dimly lit room at Victoria Ashcroft.
"You wanted the truth," Victoria said.
Audrey nodded cautiously.
Victoria smiled.
"Then let's begin with the biggest lie your family ever believed."
She slid a thin folder across the table.
Audrey looked down.
Her own birth certificate rested inside.
Except...
It wasn't the one she'd seen all her life.
The mother's name was correct.
Eleanor Vance.
But the father's name...
Wasn't Arthur Vance.
Audrey's hands began to shake.
"This..."
She looked up in disbelief.
"This is fake."
Victoria's smile never faded.
"No."
She leaned forward.
"This is the original."
Audrey's breathing became uneven.
"If Arthur isn't my father..."
Victoria finished the sentence for her.
"...then you have no idea who you really are."
Across the city, inside Arthur's office, Emily's phone suddenly vibrated.
A secure message appeared on the screen.
No sender.
No return address.
Only one photograph.
It showed Audrey tied to a chair.
Still alive.
Below the image was a single line of text.
Come alone. Midnight. Bring Eleanor. Or your sister dies.
Emily looked at the clock on Arthur's wall.
May you like
11:57 p.m.
She had exactly three minutes to decide.
