Chapter 2 - The Video Without a Beginning.

Darkness swallowed the garden for four long seconds.
Phones became floating rectangles of white light.
Guests shouted names and reached for tables that were no longer visible.
The garden hose continued hissing against the stone until someone stepped on it.
Eleanor did not move.
She heard Brooke's heels retreat.
She heard Daniel call her name.
Then emergency lights flickered on around the terrace.
Brooke was gone.
So was the brass nozzle.
The green hose lay open-ended on the ground, spilling water across the dance floor.
Lena reached Eleanor first.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Your face?"
"My face is fine."
Eleanor pointed toward the hose.
"The nozzle had a Greenway inventory tag."
Lena crouched immediately.
"It's been removed."
"I know."
Daniel pushed through the crowd.
"Mom, what were you thinking?"
Eleanor turned slowly.
"She sprayed me in front of two hundred people."
"And you hit her in front of two hundred cameras."
"That is what concerns you?"
His jaw tightened.
"What concerns me is that this is already online."
He held up his phone.
A video had been posted less than a minute earlier.
It began with Eleanor walking toward Brooke.
It did not show Brooke starting the confrontation.
It did not show the dinner.
It did not show the first blast of water.
It showed a drenched older woman advancing through a spray, striking a younger woman, and whispering something the phone could not clearly capture.
The caption read: VALE FOUNDER ATTACKS FUTURE DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AT CHARITY GALA.
The view counter was rising so fast Eleanor could barely follow it.
"Who posted it?" she asked.
Daniel looked at the account name.
"Anonymous."
Lena was already speaking into her radio.
"Lock the exterior gates."
Daniel stared at her.
"You can't detain guests."
"I'm not detaining anyone," Lena said.
"I'm preserving a scene after a security failure."
Brooke reappeared near the ballroom doors with a red mark on her cheek and tears shining in her eyes.
The tears looked perfect.
Eleanor distrusted perfect tears.
A young man in a tuxedo held Brooke's shoulders as if she had survived something terrible.
Brooke pointed at Eleanor.
"She attacked me."
Whispers spread instantly.
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
"Brooke."
"Don't."
She pulled away from him.
"You knew who she was and you let her sit there judging me all night."
"This is not about that."
"She hit me."
Eleanor watched Brooke carefully.
"After you soaked me with a hose."
Brooke gave a shaky laugh.
"It was a stupid joke."
"Using a hose belonging to Greenway Estate Services?"
The tears stopped.
Only for a fraction of a second.
But they stopped.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"The nozzle was tagged."
Brooke looked toward the hose.
"There is no nozzle."
"There was."
"Then maybe you're confused."
Daniel's face changed at that word.
Eleanor noticed.
Brooke noticed too.
"You've been through a lot," Brooke continued softly.
"Everyone knows that."
Eleanor almost smiled.
There it was.
The first brick in the wall Brooke intended to build around her.
Grief.
Confusion.
Instability.
An emotional widow who had returned from isolation and attacked her son's fiancée.
"Be careful," Eleanor said.
Brooke's eyes hardened.
"Is that another threat?"
"It's advice."
Sirens sounded beyond the estate gates.
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
"Who called the police?"
No one answered.
Five minutes later, two officers entered the courtyard.
Brooke met them halfway.
She spoke quietly, one hand pressed to her cheek.
She never once mentioned the hose until Lena interrupted.
"We have multiple witnesses to the initial harassment."
The first officer nodded.
"We'll speak with everyone involved."
Brooke gestured toward the crowd.
"They're all witnesses."
Eleanor looked around.
Dozens of people suddenly found the wet stone fascinating.
Phones lowered.
Eyes moved away.
These were donors, executives, politicians, celebrities, and social climbers.
They had recorded everything.
Now none of them wanted to be part of anything.
A server in a black uniform stood near the bar, clutching a tray to her chest.
She was young, perhaps twenty-two, with dark hair and wide brown eyes.
She looked directly at Eleanor.
Then she touched two fingers to her own pocket.
A signal.
Eleanor understood.
The server had something.
Lena saw it too.
Before either could reach her, a man wearing an event-management badge stepped between them.
He spoke into the server's ear.
Her face went pale.
She put down the tray and hurried through the service entrance.
"Who was that?" Eleanor asked.
Lena watched the man disappear after her.
"Not one of mine."
Daniel was still looking at the viral clip.
"This is getting worse."
"Because someone edited it before the power came back on," Eleanor said.
"You don't know that."
"The clip begins seven seconds after Brooke turned on the hose."
"People start recording late."
"Then how did it get posted during a blackout?"
Daniel looked up.
Eleanor continued.
"Someone was ready."
Brooke returned from speaking with the officers.
"I'm not pressing charges tonight."
Her tone was generous enough to make Eleanor's skin crawl.
"That's kind of you," Eleanor said.
"I'm doing it for Daniel."
"Of course you are."
Brooke stepped closer.
"You should go home."
Eleanor glanced around the estate.
"I am home."
Brooke's face tightened.
The exchange was quiet, but Daniel heard it.
"Mom, please."
Eleanor turned to him.
"Why did you react to the name Greenway at dinner?"
He went still.
"I didn't."
"You did."
"Not here."
"Then where?"
His phone buzzed.
He read the message and swore under his breath.
"The board wants an emergency call at eight tomorrow morning."
"About me?"
"About the video."
Eleanor looked at Brooke.
She was already texting someone.
"That was fast."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"The company is exposed."
"The company has been exposed for months."
"You have no proof."
"I had a tagged nozzle."
"Had."
The word cut deeper than it should have.
Lena returned.
"The server's name is Sophie Tran."
"Find her."
"She's gone."
"Gone where?"
"Her supervisor says she quit."
Eleanor stared at her.
"She quit in the last ten minutes?"
"Apparently."
A cold pressure settled behind Eleanor's ribs.
This was bigger than a public-relations stunt.
Someone had planned the humiliation, the recording, the blackout, and the removal of evidence.
They had also moved a witness before Eleanor could reach her.
Brooke walked toward Daniel and slipped her hand into his.
"Come with me."
Daniel hesitated.
Then he went.
Eleanor watched her son leave with the woman who had just tried to destroy her in public.
The ache surprised her more than the betrayal.
Lena stood beside her.
"There's something else."
"What?"
"The blackout wasn't an overload."
"Then what was it?"
"Someone opened the security cabinet and killed the garden circuit manually."
Eleanor looked toward the ballroom.
"Camera footage?"
"That's the problem."
Lena's expression hardened.
"Eleanor asked Lena to collect the names of every contractor who had accessed the garden electrical panel during the previous week.
Lena already had a preliminary list.
Three were legitimate estate electricians.
One was Thomas Bell, listed as a temporary Greenway supervisor.
His access badge had been issued through Brooke's department forty-eight hours before the gala.
Daniel looked at the list and said nothing.
Brooke insisted she approved hundreds of temporary credentials during major events and could not remember one name.
Eleanor watched her carefully.
Brooke's denial was plausible.
That was what made it dangerous.
The most effective lies did not require impossible facts.
They only required enough ordinary procedure to hide inside.
As the officers continued interviewing guests, Eleanor understood that proving the truth would require more than finding one missing nozzle.
She would have to reconstruct an entire system designed to make every suspicious act look routine.
Lena lowered her voice.
"And there is one more thing you need to hear."
May you like
The garden cameras stopped recording exactly thirty seconds before Brooke picked up the hose."
