Chapter 12 - The Ceremony of Lies.

The screens went black, but the power stayed on.

Music continued on the lawn.

Guests continued talking.

Only the estate's video system disappeared.

Lena's hand moved away from her jacket.

"What did you do?"

Marcus held up the remote.

"Disconnected the house feed."

"Why?"

"Because Vivian owns the company that installed the replacement cameras last winter."

Eleanor stared at him.

"You knew she was alive."

Marcus looked tired suddenly.

"For eleven years."

Brooke stepped backward.

"You told me she was dead."

"Because I wanted you nowhere near her."

"You let me attend her funeral."

"That was the point."

Brooke's face twisted with disgust.

"You are unbelievable."

Marcus accepted the accusation without reaction.

"We have approximately forty minutes before she realizes the internal feeds are gone."

Lena stepped closer.

"Start talking."

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

"Jonathan discovered Meridian nine years ago."

"You created it."

"Yes."

Daniel's fists tightened.

"So you stole from us."

"Yes."

The blunt admission silenced everyone.

Marcus continued.

"I was in debt after a development deal collapsed."

"Vivian's family money was tied up in litigation."

"I moved small amounts from Vale project accounts and intended to replace them."

Eleanor's voice was ice.

"People always intend to replace stolen money."

"I know."

"Did Jonathan know?"

"Not at first."

"Then?"

"He found an invoice that did not match the work."

"He confronted me."

"I admitted it."

Daniel stared at him.

"And Dad kept you employed?"

Marcus looked ashamed.

"He made me repay everything personally."

"He should have fired me."

"Why didn't he?" Eleanor asked.

"Because Vivian threatened to expose a larger problem."

"What larger problem?"

Marcus looked at Brooke.

"Her."

Brooke's face hardened.

"Don't you dare."

Marcus spoke to Eleanor.

"Vivian told Jonathan that if I went to prison, she would publicly claim Daniel had authorized the transfers."

"Daniel was a teenager."

"Some later transfers used his credentials after he joined the company."

"Credentials she had access to through me."

Daniel looked sick.

"You gave her my passwords?"

"Indirectly."

"That is not a thing."

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I left systems open."

"I let her see too much."

"And when I tried to cut her off, she threatened Brooke."

Brooke laughed bitterly.

"You both love calling control protection."

Eleanor looked at Marcus.

"Why fake Vivian's death?"

"She arranged it."

"The plane carried no passengers when it went down."

"The pilot survived and was paid to disappear."

"I helped cover it because I thought it was the only way to separate her from Brooke and from Vale."

"Instead, she kept operating through shell companies."

Marcus nodded.

"Meridian became Greenway."

"She used contractors, copied credentials, and manipulated vendor systems."

"Why did Jonathan write that you knew where the first money went?"

"Because I did."

"Where?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Into a trust in Brooke's name."

Brooke recoiled.

"What?"

"The first diverted funds were deposited into an account Vivian created for you."

"I never knew."

"I know."

"Then why?"

"Insurance."

Marcus's voice shook for the first time.

"If anyone found the account, the trail would lead to you."

Brooke sat down slowly.

"She framed me before I was old enough to understand what Vale was."

Marcus nodded.

Eleanor felt anger shift direction without becoming smaller.

"Jonathan knew?"

"Eventually."

"Why did he not tell me?"

Marcus looked at the floor.

"Because he was ashamed he had allowed it to continue."

That answer sounded possible.

It also sounded convenient.

Eleanor remembered Jonathan's warning not to let them destroy one another.

"Where is the proof?"

"Some is in the original Meridian ledger."

"Where?"

"Vivian has it."

"Of course she does."

"She brought it today."

Everyone stared at him.

"Why?" Lena asked.

"Because she expects to trade it for the proxy."

Brooke looked toward the door.

"She's here already."

Marcus nodded.

"North guesthouse."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Then we call the police."

Lena shook her head.

"We call investigators, but we do not hand them a story with half the evidence missing."

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"If Vivian sees law enforcement before the proxy is signed, the ledger disappears."

"And if we play along?"

"She brings it to the ceremony."

Brooke stood.

"How do you know?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Because she called me this morning."

"She thinks I am still helping her."

Brooke's face twisted.

"Which side are you on?"

Marcus answered after a long pause.

"The side where my daughter stops paying for what I did."

Brooke looked away.

No forgiveness passed between them.

But something human did.

Eleanor checked the time.

"Then the wedding begins."

Lena stared at her.

"You are serious."

"We need Vivian to believe she is winning."

Daniel looked at Brooke.

"Can you do that?"

Brooke swallowed.

"Yes."

"Can I believe anything you say today?"

Her face crumpled slightly.

"Not until I earn it."

Daniel nodded once.

"Good answer."

The ceremony started at four beneath white roses and hanging lights.

News helicopters circled beyond the estate boundaries.

Guests whispered as Eleanor took her seat in the front row.

The same woman who had been sprayed and recorded days earlier now sat motionless while the younger woman walked toward her son in white.

The optics were irresistible.

Phones rose despite a request for privacy.

Eleanor welcomed them this time.

Independent cameras installed by Lena recorded from hidden positions.

The truth would have backups.

Brooke reached Daniel.

The officiant began.

For several minutes, everything looked like a wedding.

Then Eleanor saw Vivian.

She stood at the rear beneath a wide cream hat and dark glasses.

No one else recognized her.

Marcus did.

His shoulders stiffened.

Vivian smiled faintly.

The vows continued.

Daniel's voice was steady.

Brooke's was not.

When the officiant asked if Daniel took Brooke as his wife, Daniel paused.

The entire lawn seemed to stop breathing.

He looked at Brooke.

Then at Eleanor.

Then toward the back where Vivian waited.

"I do," Daniel said.

Eleanor's heart dropped.

That was not the plan.

Brooke looked equally shocked.

Daniel had said he would stop before the vows.

He had just married her.

The officiant turned to Brooke.

Her eyes remained fixed on Daniel.

"I do," she whispered.

Applause broke out.

Eleanor did not move.

Daniel had changed the plan without telling anyone.

The board attorney approached a table beside the pavilion with the proxy documents.

Vivian moved closer through the guests.

Marcus's face had gone pale.

Daniel took the pen.

Brooke touched his wrist.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"Trust me once."

The same words he had given Eleanor.

He signed.

Brooke's breath caught.

The attorney turned the pages toward her.

She signed as well.

The proxy became effective immediately.

Vivian smiled.

Eleanor felt anger rise like heat.

Daniel had just handed Brooke the voting power they had spent days trying to protect.

Brooke picked up the signed document.

Then she turned toward Vivian.

"Is this what you wanted?"

The guests fell silent.

Vivian stopped walking.

For the first time in twelve years, Marcus Rourke looked directly at the wife everyone thought was dead.

Vivian removed her sunglasses.

Gasps rippled through the older guests who recognized her.

"Very dramatic," Vivian said.

Her voice was calm and elegant.

Brooke held up the proxy.

"You said if I gave you this, you would give me the ledger."

Daniel's face revealed nothing.

Vivian looked toward Eleanor.

"Still walking through water, Ellie?"

Eleanor stood.

"Still hiding behind other people's names, Vivian?"

Vivian smiled.

"Jonathan always said you were stubborn."

"Jonathan said many things."

"Not enough, apparently."

Vivian opened the slim case she carried.

Inside was a thick leather ledger.

Eleanor recognized Jonathan's notes in the margins of several pages.

Her pulse quickened.

Brooke held out the proxy.

Vivian held out the ledger.

They moved toward each other.

Then Daniel spoke.

"Before anyone trades anything, I think the bride deserves one wedding gift."

He reached into his jacket.

Vivian's smile faded.

Daniel removed a folded document and handed it to Brooke.

She opened it.

Her eyes widened.

"What is this?"

"The proxy you signed transfers my voting authority to you."

"I know."

"Read paragraph nine."

Brooke did.

Then she looked at him.

A stunned laugh escaped her.

Daniel turned toward Vivian.

"Any proxy obtained through coercion, undisclosed conflict, or fraudulent inducement automatically assigns the voting rights to an independent employee trust until judicial review."

Eleanor stared at her son.

Daniel had not handed Brooke control.

He had handed control away from every member of the family.

Vivian's face changed.

"You altered the agreement."

"No."

The board attorney stepped forward.

"The clause has existed in the family trust framework since 1998."

Eleanor suddenly remembered.

Jonathan had insisted on it after an early investor attempted to force a vote through threats.

Daniel looked at his mother.

"Dad taught me to read the boring paragraphs."

For the first time all week, Eleanor smiled.

Vivian snapped the ledger case shut.

"Then there is no deal."

She turned to leave.

Lena stepped into her path.

"Actually, there is."

Two state financial investigators entered through the side aisle.

Vivian's composure finally cracked.

She looked at Marcus.

"You called them."

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

Eleanor looked at Sophie standing near the service entrance beside her brother.

Sophie lifted her phone.

"I did."

Vivian clutched the ledger.

Then she smiled again.

"You all think this book proves what you want it to prove."

She looked directly at Eleanor.

May you like

"It proves Jonathan was the one who started everything."
