Chapter 5: The Woman Who Refused to Be Hidden

Weeks passed.

Lena slowly recovered.

She refused expensive jewelry.

She refused designer clothes.

She even insisted on helping in the estate's enormous kitchen.

"You don't have to work," Damon reminded her.

"I know."

"Then why?"

She smiled gently.

"Because work reminds me who I am."

That answer stayed with him all day.

For years people had wanted his money.

His influence.

His protection.

Lena wanted none of it.

She only wanted her dignity.

One afternoon, reporters gathered outside the Cross Foundation's annual charity gala.

The entire city expected Damon to arrive alone.

Instead...

He stepped from his limousine and offered his hand.

Lena accepted.

Her baby bump was unmistakable beneath an elegant emerald gown.

Cameras exploded with flashes.

Gasps echoed across the entrance.

One reporter shouted,

"Mr. Cross! Is this the mother of your children?"

Damon looked directly into every camera.

"Yes."

"Will you be making an official statement?"

He smiled slightly.

"I already have."

He turned toward Lena.

Placed one hand gently over her stomach.

And kissed her forehead.

"No one harms my family again."
