CHAPTER 3: THE TRUTH THE STERLINGS COULDN'T HIDE

The celebration had become a courtroom.

No judge.

No jury.

Only truth.

Colonel Vance requested the ballroom projector.

Minutes later, military archives appeared across the giant screen.

Classified photographs.

Mission reports.

Letters.

One final document.

A DNA report completed only three months earlier after remains recovered overseas were finally identified.

Major Daniel Ashford.

Confirmed.

Among his personal effects...

The second half of Maya's medal.

Colonel Vance carefully joined the two broken pieces together.

They fit perfectly.

Victoria's confidence shattered.

"This proves nothing," she snapped.

"It proves everything," the Colonel replied.

He turned toward Ethan.

"Did you know your wife grew up in foster homes because someone forged documents after her father's death?"

Ethan slowly looked at his mother.

Victoria couldn't answer.

Her silence became the confession.

Years earlier, fearing Maya's military inheritance would complicate a future business merger, Victoria had bribed a corrupt official to erase every record connecting the little girl to the Ashford family.

She thought the truth had disappeared forever.

Instead...

It had survived inside one forgotten medal.

Ethan felt sick.

He remembered every time Maya had apologized for being "just an orphan."

Every insult.

Every lonely birthday.

Every holiday spent pretending she didn't care.

He had failed her.

Not because he hated her.

Because he had been too weak to stand against his own mother.

He slowly removed his Sterling family ring.

"I don't deserve to call myself your husband."

Victoria gasped.

"Ethan!"

He ignored her.

Walking toward Maya, he dropped to one knee.

"I'm not asking for forgiveness today."

He lowered his head.

"I'm asking for the chance to earn it... for the rest of my life."

Maya looked down at the sleeping baby in her arms.

Then at the broken man before her.

Some wounds could heal.

May you like

Others left scars forever.

Only time would decide which this was.
