CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 2: THE MEDAL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

No one moved.

The echo of Colonel Marcus Vance's command seemed to freeze the air itself.

"Lock the doors."

Within seconds, uniformed security officers obeyed without question. Heavy oak doors sealed shut with a dull metallic click that reverberated across the silent ballroom.

Victoria Sterling frowned.

"What is the meaning of this?" she demanded.

Colonel Vance didn't answer.

Instead, he held the tarnished silver medal with both hands, almost reverently. His weathered fingers traced the faded engraving hidden beneath decades of scratches.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"I buried this medal twenty-eight years ago."

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Victoria laughed nervously.

"It's an old piece of junk."

"No."

The Colonel's eyes never left Maya.

"This medal belonged to Major Daniel Ashford."

Every military veteran in the room stiffened.

The name carried weight.

Daniel Ashford had sacrificed himself during a classified rescue mission that saved dozens of soldiers trapped behind enemy lines. His body had never been recovered.

The government declared him dead.

His bloodline...

Extinct.

Colonel Vance slowly turned the medal over.

Engraved inside were six tiny words.

For My Daughter... Until We Meet Again.

His hands began to tremble.

He looked directly at Maya.

"What was your mother's name?"

Maya swallowed.

"Emily."

The Colonel closed his eyes.

"And your father?"

"I... I never knew him."

A tear escaped the old soldier's eye.

"You do now."

The ballroom exploded into stunned whispers.

Victoria's face drained of color.

Ethan stared at his wife as though seeing her for the first time.

"You are Major Daniel Ashford's daughter."

Silence.

Then Colonel Vance stood at attention.

Slowly...

He saluted.

Every veteran in the ballroom followed.

One by one.

Then another.

Soon dozens of decorated officers stood perfectly still, saluting the young woman they had watched being humiliated only moments before.

Maya stood frozen, tears streaming silently down her face while cradling her crying baby.

May you like

For the first time in her life...

Someone honored where she came from.
