Chapter 1 – The Truth Hidden for Twenty Years

Chapter 1 – The Truth Hidden for Twenty Years
Lily stared at the completed heart-shaped locket in disbelief.
Her fingers trembled as she looked from the necklace to Vanessa's tear-filled eyes.
"No..." Lily whispered. "That can't be possible."
Vanessa's confident smile had completely vanished. For the first time in her life, she looked frightened.
"My mother..." Vanessa murmured. "She always kept the other half locked away in her jewelry box. She told me it belonged to the baby sister we lost."
The ballroom was silent.
Even the musicians had stopped playing.
An elderly woman stepped forward through the crowd.
Margaret Collins, the Ashford family's longtime housekeeper, gasped the moment she saw the two lockets joined together.
"My God..."
Everyone turned toward her.
Margaret covered her mouth with shaking hands.
"I remember those lockets. Mrs. Ashford had them custom-made after her second daughter was born."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"You knew?"
Margaret nodded slowly.
"There was a terrible fire at the family's lake house twenty years ago. Everyone believed the baby had died."
Lily's heart pounded.
"But I didn't."
Margaret shook her head.
"No. A volunteer firefighter found an infant wrapped in a blanket several miles away after the chaos. There was no identification. The authorities believed she belonged to another family that had evacuated."
Lily felt the room spinning.
"My adoptive parents..."
"They rescued you from the state foster system six months later," Margaret said gently.
Vanessa collapsed into a chair.
"My parents searched for years."
"They never stopped," Margaret replied.
"They simply searched for the wrong child."
