District Attorney Claire Donovan laid dozens of financial records across the dining table.
"Mrs. Hart wasn't attacked because of jealousy alone."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Claire opened the first folder.
"Three months ago, Olivia became the sole beneficiary of your late father's private trust."
Marcus stared.
"What?"
Olivia looked equally shocked.
"I never knew."
"You weren't supposed to."
Claire nodded.
"Your father feared someone inside the family would try to eliminate the baby's inheritance."
Every eye slowly shifted toward Vanessa.
She shook her head wildly.
"I didn't know about any trust!"
Claire slid over another document.
"This wire transfer says otherwise."
Five million dollars.
Transferred into Vanessa's offshore account.
The sender's name made Marcus freeze.
His mother.
Margaret Hart.
"No..."
Mrs. Hart entered the room at that exact moment.
She looked neither frightened nor surprised.
"I told Vanessa to do it."
Olivia felt the air leave her lungs.
Margaret spoke without emotion.
"One dead baby was cheaper than losing the company."
Marcus stepped backward as if struck.
"You're my mother."
Margaret answered coldly.
"And I protected this family."
Detective Ruiz stepped forward.
"No."
"You destroyed it."
