Chapter 1 – The Officer Opens the Dumpster Bag

Chapter 1 – The Officer Opens the Dumpster Bag
The officer froze the moment he looked at Lily.
Her tiny body was wrapped in a thermal blanket while paramedics rushed to load her into the ambulance. Dirt covered her face. Food scraps clung to her pajamas. One small hand still clutched the stuffed rabbit someone had thrown in with the trash.
Officer Daniel Reeves turned toward my parents.
"Who put this child in that dumpster?"
Silence.
No one answered.
My father crossed his arms.
"She's exaggerating."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"You watched your granddaughter nearly die."
My mother finally spoke.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Those six words changed everything.
Officer Reeves immediately separated everyone.
Another officer escorted Marcus and me toward the ambulance while detectives began photographing both dumpsters.
Inside the trash they found more than garbage.
They discovered Lily's birthday presents.
Her unopened gifts.
Her birthday cake.
Her backpack.
Her blanket.
Every trace of her birthday had been deliberately thrown away.
Then one detective found something even stranger.
A prescription pill bottle.
The label had been peeled off.
Only a few crushed blue tablets remained inside.
The paramedic glanced at it.
"Tell the hospital to run a toxicology screen."
My stomach dropped.

Someone hadn't simply abandoned my daughter.
Someone had drugged her first.
