Daniel finally understood why his mother had searched Elise's office.
"What envelope were you looking for?"
Margaret hesitated.
"My husband left me a letter before he died."
Daniel frowned.
"What letter?"
"He wrote that the family home would always belong to you and me equally."
Nora quietly added, "Mrs. Vale said the letter disappeared two weeks ago."
Daniel looked directly at Elise.
"You took it."
"I protected this family."
"No."
Daniel unlocked the desk drawer in Elise's office.
Inside sat the missing envelope.
Alongside it were financial statements, forged signatures, and transfer documents moving hundreds of thousands of dollars from Margaret's personal accounts into companies Elise secretly controlled.
Daniel stared at the paperwork in disbelief.
"How long has this been happening?"
Margaret lowered her eyes.
"Almost a year."
