Chapter 9 - The Name in the Ledger.

Claire read the word ELISE until it stopped looking like a name.

For thirteen years, her mother existed in photographs, old perfume bottles, holiday memories, and the sound of Thomas becoming quiet every December.

Now her name sat inside Richard Cole's secret ledger beside a transfer code.

Claire felt violated by the sight of it.

"What does it mean?"

Thomas did not answer.

Bennett closed the book before Claire could touch the page.

"We need this processed properly."

Claire turned on her.

"That is my mother's name."

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

Bennett remained calm.

"And if this ledger matters in a criminal case, I need it to survive one."

Claire looked away.

She knew Bennett was right.

That did not make patience easier.

Natalie stepped beside her.

"I have seen the code before."

Thomas turned sharply.

"Where?"

"In my father's private files."

"What did it refer to?"

Natalie hesitated.

"A holding company."

Thomas went still.

Claire looked between them.

"What holding company?"

Natalie spoke carefully.

"Elise Ventures LLC."

Thomas closed his eyes.

Claire's voice rose.

"You know it."

"Yes."

"What is it?"

Thomas looked older than he had an hour earlier.

"It was a company your mother created."

Claire stared at him.

"Mom had a company?"

"Several."

"You told me she left Harrington Capital when I was born."

"She did."

"Then why did she have a holding company?"

Thomas looked toward the harbor.

"Because your mother never stopped investing."

Claire waited.

He continued.

"Elise Ventures funded small construction and manufacturing companies."

Tessa's expression changed.

"Including Quinn Industrial?"

Thomas nodded.

Tessa stepped back as if physically struck.

"My father's company?"

"Your father and Elise were friends."

Tessa stared at him.

"I never knew that."

"You were young."

"I was twenty-three when she died."

Thomas's face tightened.

"Then your father chose not to tell you."

Claire had stopped listening to the tone.

She was focused on one fact.

Her mother had been financially connected to Quinn Industrial.

The same company Richard later used as a scapegoat.

"Did Mom know Richard?"

Thomas nodded slowly.

"Yes."

"How well?"

"Too well."

Mason looked at Thomas.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas ignored him.

Claire stepped closer.

"Dad."

He looked at her.

"Richard approached Elise fourteen years ago about investing in a redevelopment project."

"She refused."

"Why?"

"She thought the numbers were false."

Natalie whispered.

"They probably were."

Thomas nodded.

"Elise began looking into Richard's subcontractors."

Claire felt a familiar dread.

"And?"

"And she found irregular payments."

Tessa looked toward the ledger.

"Quinn Industrial."

"Among others."

Claire's voice became unsteady.

"Why didn't she report him?"

Thomas looked at her for a long time.

"She planned to."

The construction site disappeared around Claire.

All she could see was her father.

"Planned to?"

"She had a meeting scheduled with a federal investigator."

Claire's mouth went dry.

"When?"

Thomas did not answer immediately.

He did not need to.

"Before she died."

His eyes filled with something Claire had rarely seen in him.

Fear.

"Two days before."

Claire stopped breathing.

Tessa whispered.

"Oh my God."

Thomas shook his head quickly.

"The doctors found an aneurysm."

Claire stared at him.

"You think Richard killed Mom?"

"No."

The answer came too fast.

"I don't know."

"Which is it?"

"Claire, an aneurysm is not something Richard could simply cause."

"Then why are you scared?"

Thomas looked down.

"Because the night your mother died, her research files disappeared from our house."

Claire felt her knees weaken.

Thomas continued.

"I assumed she had moved them to the office."

"They were not there."

"Gregory told me she had probably destroyed them because she changed her mind about confronting Richard."

Natalie's face hardened.

"Gregory again."

Thomas nodded.

"I believed him."

Claire looked away before she said something cruel.

Her father had trusted Gregory.

Mason had trusted Richard.

Tessa had trusted Mason.

Natalie had trusted Evelyn.

Claire had trusted all of them at different points.

The entire catastrophe seemed built from people handing dangerous truths to the wrong person.

Captain Bennett's radio interrupted them.

Daniel Price had been arrested six blocks away after abandoning another vehicle.

He was refusing to speak.

The demolition supervisor had provided his phone records voluntarily.

And Gregory Vale had just been found unconscious in a downtown parking garage.

Thomas went pale.

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Condition?"

"Unknown."

Thomas started toward his car.

Bennett stopped him.

"You're not going anywhere alone."

Thomas looked ready to argue.

Claire grabbed his arm.

"She's right."

He looked at her.

"Gregory may know what happened to your mother's files."

"And whoever hurt him knows he was talking."

Thomas hesitated.

Then nodded.

They left Harbor Point under police escort.

By seven-thirty, news vans had gathered outside Massachusetts General Hospital.

Claire assumed they were there because of Gregory.

She was wrong.

They were there because of her.

The wedding video had spread across every major social platform overnight.

Someone had edited the footage into a ninety-second clip beginning with Tessa exposing the fake belly and ending with Claire calling her father.

The middle conversation had been removed.

Mason's warning had been removed.

Evelyn's admission that she invited Tessa had been removed.

The result made Claire look exactly like the villain Evelyn needed.

A wealthy bride caught faking a pregnancy to secure a fortune.

Headlines multiplied by the minute.

BILLIONAIRE'S DAUGHTER EXPOSED IN WEDDING PREGNANCY SCANDAL.

FAKE BABY, REAL FORTUNE.

DID CLAIRE HARRINGTON MARRY FOR MONEY?

Claire stared at the television in a private hospital waiting room.

"Turn it off."

Thomas's attorney muted the screen.

Tessa paced near the window.

"That's not my original livestream."

Claire looked at her.

"What?"

"The video online has cuts I didn't make."

"You streamed it publicly."

"Yes, but my live archive includes everything."

She opened her account.

Her original stream was gone.

Tessa's face changed.

"Someone removed it."

Thomas's attorney frowned.

"Can the platform do that?"

"They can, but this says I deleted it."

"Did you?"

"No."

Claire almost laughed.

Phones deleting themselves.

Medical records disappearing.

Security access being changed.

Livestreams altered.

The lies were no longer only verbal.

Someone was rewriting digital history in real time.

Mason stood near the door, separated from Claire by two security officers and a silence neither seemed willing to cross.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen and froze.

Claire noticed.

"Who is it?"

Mason ignored the question.

"Mason."

He looked at her.

"My mother."

"Answer it."

He shook his head.

"Why?"

"Because she never calls unless she already knows what she wants."

Claire held out her hand.

"Speaker."

Mason looked almost amused despite everything.

"You're developing a habit."

"Answer it."

He did.

Evelyn's voice came through calm and clear.

"Mason, come home."

Mason stared at the phone.

"No."

"Your father has left the country."

Everyone in the waiting room went still.

Natalie stepped forward.

"Where?"

Evelyn heard her voice.

Silence followed.

Then she said something Claire would never forget.

"So the dead girl finally decided to ruin us all."

Natalie's face hardened.

"Hello, Mother."

Evelyn exhaled.

"You have no idea what you've done."

"I know exactly what Dad did."

"Your father is not the only problem."

Claire moved closer.

"Then tell us what the problem is."

Evelyn laughed softly.

"Claire, sweetheart, you're still pretending this is about your marriage."

Claire's hands curled.

"It stopped being about my marriage when you invited someone to rip open my dress."

"I saved you."

The room went silent.

Claire stared at the phone.

"You what?"

"If that pregnancy lie had survived another forty-eight hours, your father would have transferred the first Harbor Point tranche."

Thomas shook his head.

"No, I wouldn't."

Evelyn paused.

"Thomas."

"You miscalculated."

"Did I?"

Her voice sharpened.

"Ask your attorneys whether Gregory already authorized the transfer."

Thomas looked at his lawyer.

The lawyer immediately started typing on a laptop.

Claire felt dread return.

Evelyn continued.

"Three hundred million dollars was scheduled to move at nine this morning."

Thomas's attorney looked up.

His face had gone pale.

"There is a pending wire instruction."

Thomas stared at him.

"Who approved it?"

"Your credentials."

Thomas's voice dropped.

"I did not approve any wire."

Evelyn laughed softly through the phone.

"Then maybe you should stop assuming Claire married into the only dishonest family."

The call ended.

One second later, every phone in the room buzzed.

A new video had been posted online from an anonymous account.

Claire opened it.

The footage showed Mason in a private office three months earlier.

He was speaking to Gregory Vale.

The audio was clear.

"Once Claire signs the marriage license, Thomas won't be able to pull out without destroying his own daughter."

Gregory smiled.

"Then make sure she signs."

Mason looked directly toward the hidden camera.

"She will."

Claire stared at her husband.
