Chapter 3 - The Clinic With Her Name.

The Harrington townhouse in Back Bay had never felt like a refuge to Claire before.
It was too formal, too quiet, and too filled with reminders of the life her father had built before she was old enough to understand what money could do to a family.
That night, it became the only place she could breathe.
Thomas Harrington was waiting in the library when Claire arrived just after midnight.
He had removed his tie, but otherwise he still looked like the chairman photographed on business pages every quarter.
Tall, gray at the temples, and impossible to read unless you knew the tiny signs.
Claire knew them.
His left hand was closed around his glasses.
That meant he was furious.
He looked at her torn wedding dress first.
Then at Tessa.
Then at the fake belly Claire was carrying under one arm like a piece of evidence.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Thomas finally walked toward his daughter.
"Are you hurt?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
He looked again at the torn lace.
"Did Mason touch you?"
"No."
Thomas exhaled slowly.
Only then did he acknowledge Tessa.
"Ms. Quinn."
Tessa straightened.
"Mr. Harrington."
"You humiliated my daughter in front of two hundred people."
"I thought she was helping them commit fraud."
Claire closed her eyes.
The word fraud made the room feel smaller.
Thomas did not blink.
"Sit down."
It was not a request.
Tessa sat in one of the leather chairs near the fireplace.
Claire stayed standing.
Thomas turned to her.
"You too."
"Dad, I can't."
"Then pace."
Claire almost smiled despite everything.
It vanished quickly.
She placed the fake belly on a side table.
Under the library lamp, it looked grotesquely ordinary.
A molded piece of silicone.
A cheap prop responsible for destroying a very expensive wedding.
Thomas picked up his phone.
"My attorneys are on the way."
Claire shook her head.
"No attorneys yet."
"Claire."
"I need to know what happened before everyone turns this into a lawsuit."
Thomas studied her for a moment.
"Fine."
He looked at Tessa.
"Start with why you were at the wedding."
Tessa clasped her hands together.
For the first time that evening, she looked nervous.
"Evelyn contacted me three days ago."
Claire stopped pacing.
"Why?"
"She said Mason had gotten himself into something serious and needed help."
"From his ex-girlfriend?"
Tessa's mouth tightened.
"Mason and I weren't just dating."
Claire felt her shoulders stiffen.
"What does that mean?"
Tessa looked at Thomas, then back at Claire.
"We were engaged."
Claire stared at her.
Mason had told her he and Tessa dated briefly in graduate school.
Nothing serious.
Nothing complicated.
A mistake from his twenties.
Claire suddenly remembered Evelyn describing Tessa once as someone who had always been too emotional for Mason.
That sentence looked different now.
"How long?"
"Almost two years."
Claire sat down at last.
"Why did it end?"
Tessa hesitated.
"Because of Richard."
Thomas moved toward the bar and poured water into a glass.
He gave it to Claire.
"Explain."
Tessa looked at the floor.
"My father owned a construction supplier called Quinn Industrial."
Thomas nodded slowly.
"I remember it."
"Then you remember what happened."
Quinn Industrial had collapsed five years earlier after a federal procurement investigation.
Claire vaguely remembered the headlines.
Contract fraud.
False invoices.
A bankruptcy that wiped out hundreds of jobs.
Tessa continued.
"Cole Development was one of our biggest clients."
Thomas's expression sharpened.
"Richard testified against your father."
"Yes."
"And your father went to prison."
Tessa nodded.
Claire felt the room shift again.
"What does that have to do with Mason?"
"Everything."
Tessa lifted her eyes.
"Mason knew Cole Development was using Quinn Industrial to move money between projects."
Thomas went still.
"You're sure?"
"I saw emails."
"Did federal investigators see them?"
"No."
Claire looked between them.
"Why not?"
Tessa's voice became bitter.
"Because the night before I was supposed to meet with them, Mason begged me not to."
Claire's stomach tightened.
"And you listened?"
"I loved him."
The answer was painfully simple.
Tessa swallowed.
"He told me his father would go to prison, his mother would lose everything, and hundreds of innocent employees would be hurt."
Claire stared at her.
The words sounded familiar.
Almost identical to what Mason had said about the fake pregnancy.
Tessa saw the recognition on Claire's face.
"He said the same thing to you, didn't he?"
Claire did not answer.
She did not need to.
Thomas's jaw tightened.
"What happened to the emails?"
"They disappeared from Mason's laptop."
"And your father's company took the blame."
"Yes."
Tessa looked toward the fake belly on the table.
"When Evelyn called me this week, I thought she was finally ready to admit what they had done."
Claire frowned.
"Why would you think that?"
"Because she told me Mason was using another woman to solve another family crisis."
Claire felt cold.
"Another woman."
"You."
Tessa took out her phone.
"She sent me screenshots."
Claire crossed the room and took the device.
The messages were from a contact saved as EVELYN COLE.
One line read, CLAIRE KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT SHE IS DOING.
Another read, SHE AGREED TO FAKE THE PREGNANCY TO FORCE THOMAS INTO FINANCING HARBOR POINT.
Claire's breath caught.
"That's not true."
"I know that now."
"You believed I designed this?"
Tessa looked ashamed.
"I believed you were rich enough to think consequences were optional."
Thomas's eyes flashed, but Claire raised one hand before he could speak.
"Keep going."
Tessa nodded.
"Evelyn told me to come to the wedding and confront you."
"Why?"
"She said public exposure would force Thomas to pull financing, and then Richard could blame the collapse on you."
Claire stared at her.
"That makes no sense."
Thomas spoke quietly.
"It does if they already knew the financing was going to fail."
Claire turned toward him.
"What do you mean?"
Thomas walked to his desk.
He opened a locked drawer and removed a folder.
"I started reviewing Harbor Point after Mason asked me to accelerate the transfer."
Claire looked at him.
"You never told me."
"Because I didn't want you caught in the middle."
"I'm standing in a wedding dress carrying a fake pregnancy belly, Dad."
His face softened briefly.
"I know."
He opened the folder.
Inside were bank records, internal memos, and photographs of construction sites.
"Cole Development is missing at least forty-two million dollars."
Tessa leaned forward.
"Missing?"
"Moved through shell vendors, consulting agreements, and inflated invoices."
Claire looked at the documents.
Her hands began to shake again.
"Mason knew?"
Thomas hesitated.
That hesitation was worse than an immediate answer.
"I don't know."
Claire closed the folder.
"Then what about the clinic?"
Tessa took back her phone and opened another file.
"I found this because Evelyn sent me access to Mason's old cloud account."
"She gave you access?"
"Yes."
Thomas frowned.
"Why would she do that?"
Tessa looked troubled.
"I thought she wanted me to find evidence against Claire."
"But?"
"But the account contained things that hurt Mason too."
She handed the phone to Claire.
A scanned form filled the screen.
COMMONWEALTH REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE.
Patient: Claire Elise Harrington.
The date was six weeks earlier.
Claire read the procedure description twice before the words made sense.
Embryo cryopreservation consultation.
Genetic screening authorization.
She looked up slowly.
"I've never been there."
Tessa nodded.
"I know."
"Then why is my signature on this?"
Thomas took the phone.
His face hardened.
"It's forged."
Claire looked at the next page.
A payment authorization listed Cole Family Holdings.
Another page referenced biological material supplied by spouse.
Claire's throat tightened.
"What biological material?"
Tessa's face went pale.
"That's the part I couldn't open."
Thomas immediately called his attorney.
Claire barely heard the conversation.
Her attention stayed on the forged signature.
Mason had lied about Tessa.
He had lied about the fake pregnancy.
He had lied about his family's finances.
Now her name appeared on medical forms she had never signed.
Her phone buzzed on the table.
Mason.
She ignored it.
It rang again.
Then a text appeared.
CLAIRE, PLEASE DON'T BELIEVE TESSA.
A second message followed.
MY MOTHER SET THIS UP.
Then a third.
AND SHE DIDN'T DO IT ALONE.
Claire stared at the screen.
Before she could reply, the front door alarm chimed downstairs.
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
A housekeeper's voice came over the intercom.
"Mr. Harrington, there is a man at the door asking for Claire."
Thomas frowned.
"Who?"
The answer came after a short pause.
"He says he's Dr. Samuel Reed from Commonwealth Reproductive Medicine."
Claire's blood turned cold.
The housekeeper continued.
May you like
"He says Claire's medical records are about to be destroyed."
