Chapter 3: The Truth About Claire

At 10:00 AM, Leah didn't pack her bags. Instead, she walked right into the lion's den.
The Mercer Enterprises corporate tower was a monolith of glass and steel in the center of the financial district. Leah ignored the stares of the receptionists, marching straight to the security desk. Before she could even ask for Julian Mercer, a familiar face stepped out of the elevator banks.
It was Julian. He looked like he hadn't slept in a week. His tie was gone, his collar unbuttoned, and the silver locket was clutched tightly in his hand.
When he saw Leah, he stopped dead in his tracks.
"You came," he breathed, stepping past his security guards and rushing toward her.
"I didn't come to play nice," Leah warned, stepping back. "Your wife sent a fixer to my shop this morning. She threatened to frame me for theft if I didn't take a check and leave town."
Julian’s jaw clenched, a dangerous fire igniting in his gray eyes. "Eleanor will not touch you. I swear it to you, Leah. Please. Come upstairs. I need to talk to you."
Reluctantly, Leah followed him into the private executive elevator. The silence between them was heavy, loaded with twenty-five years of unanswered questions. When they reached his penthouse office, Julian closed the door and turned to her.
"Your mother," Julian started, his voice cracking. "Claire. When did she...?"
"She died of cancer when I was ten," Leah said bluntly. She wasn't going to soften the blow. "She raised me alone. She worked three jobs. We barely had enough to eat some weeks."
Julian closed his eyes, leaning heavily against his mahogany desk as if he had been struck. "Oh, God. Claire."
"Who are you to me?" Leah demanded, crossing her arms. "Because Eleanor accused you of thinking my mother's baby died. What baby?"
Julian opened his eyes, looking at her with a profound, crushing sorrow. "You, Leah. I am your father."
The words hung in the air, heavy and suffocating. Leah shook her head, taking a step back. "No. My mother said my father was a stranger."
"I was never a stranger," Julian pleaded, stepping forward. "Claire and I were in love. We were engaged twenty-six years ago. But my father’s company—this empire—was on the verge of bankruptcy. Eleanor's family was old money. They offered a merger, a bailout. But it required a marriage."
Leah stared at him in disgust. "So you sold her out for money."
"I tried to refuse!" Julian argued, his voice rising with desperate regret. "But Claire found out how much debt we were in. She knew my family would lose everything. One night, she just left. She packed her bags and vanished. A month later, Eleanor told me she had tracked Claire down. She told me Claire was pregnant, but that there were complications. She brought me a death certificate, Leah. She told me Claire and the baby died in childbirth."
Leah felt the room spin. "Eleanor faked a death certificate?"
"She told me you were dead so I would marry her," Julian whispered, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "And I did. I lived the last twenty-five years mourning a woman who was alive, raising my child in poverty. Because of a lie."
Leah looked at the locket in Julian’s hand. Then she looked at the pale-green brooch on her own chest.
"My mother left me this brooch," Leah said quietly. "She said it was the only thing of value she owned. She told me to never sell it, no matter how hungry we got."
Julian looked at the brooch, and the color drained completely from his face. He stumbled back, bracing himself against the desk.
"That's not just a brooch," Julian said, his voice trembling with a mixture of awe and terror. "Leah... that is the Mercer Family Signet. My grandfather had it custom-made for the primary heir of the Mercer Trust."
Leah looked down at the delicate leaves and the pearl. "I don't understand."
"When my father realized I was going to marry Eleanor, he altered his will," Julian explained, pacing the room. "He hated Eleanor. He suspected she was manipulating me. Before he died, he placed sixty percent of the company’s voting shares into a blind trust. The trust unlocks only for the blood heir who possesses that pin."

Julian stopped pacing and looked at Leah, realizing the terrifying gravity of the situation.
"Leah, Eleanor didn't just lie to me about you being dead. If you are alive, and you have that pin... you own Mercer Enterprises. Eleanor owns nothing. And if she knows who you are, your life is in absolute danger."
