Chapter 18: The Trojan Horse

At 8:45 AM, the grand lobby of the Mercer Enterprises building was packed with reporters, financial analysts, and television crews. The sudden ousting of Julian Mercer, a beloved philanthropic CEO, had sent shockwaves through Wall Street.
On a raised dais at the front of the lobby stood Chairman Sterling, looking impeccably groomed and projecting an aura of tragic stability.
"Good morning," Sterling said into the microphone, his deep voice commanding the room. "It is with a heavy heart that the board of directors has decided to transition leadership. Julian Mercer’s recent mental health struggles have tragically incapacitated his ability to lead. For the stability of the thousands of families this company employs, I will be stepping in as interim CEO."
Camera shutters clicked furiously.
"Mr. Sterling!" a reporter shouted from the front row. "What about the viral video? The claims of a secret heiress who holds the majority voting shares?"
Sterling offered a practiced, pitying smile. "A tragic extortion attempt by a very disturbed young woman taking advantage of Julian’s fragile state. Our legal team has already secured an injunction against her fraudulent claims."
"Is that so, Richard?"
The loud, booming voice echoed through the lobby, cutting over the murmurs of the press.
The heavy glass revolving doors of the building stopped spinning. Standing in the entrance, flanked by Vance and a dozen heavily armed private security guards, were Julian Mercer, Mateo Sterling, and Leah.
Sterling’s confident smile instantly vanished, replaced by a mask of sheer panic. He gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles cracked.
"Julian," Sterling stammered, recovering quickly for the cameras. "You shouldn't be here. You need medical attention."
"The only thing I need," Julian said, his voice echoing powerfully as he marched toward the dais, the sea of reporters parting for him, "is for the world to know the truth."
"Security!" Sterling shouted, pointing at them. "Remove these trespassers!"
The building's corporate guards stepped forward, but Vance and his elite team instantly raised their weapons, creating an impenetrable wall around Leah, Julian, and Mateo.
"Stand down," Vance ordered the corporate guards, his voice like grinding stone. "You work for the CEO. And you're looking at him."
The corporate guards, confused and outgunned, slowly backed away.
Leah walked up the steps to the dais, stepping right into Sterling’s personal space. She didn't look like a florist anymore. She wore a sharp, tailored black suit, the pale-green signet pinned proudly to the lapel. She looked like an executioner.
"You told me last night that we deal in ledgers, not emotions, Mr. Sterling," Leah said, loud enough for every microphone on the podium to catch.
Sterling leaned in, his voice a panicked hiss intended only for her. "If you do this, you destroy your own wealth. You destroy the company."
"I am burning the rot out of this company," Leah whispered back fiercely. "Starting with you."
Leah turned to the press, holding up a thick stack of printed documents.

"My name is Leah Mercer," she announced, her voice ringing clear and steady. "I am the legal, biological daughter of Julian Mercer, and the primary shareholder of the Mercer Trust. And I am here today to expose a massive criminal conspiracy orchestrated by the man standing behind me."
The lobby erupted into absolute bedlam.
