Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden in the Shadows

Chapter 1: The Truth Hidden in the Shadows

The flashing red and blue lights disappeared down the driveway, carrying away the terrified maid, Sofia Bennett.

Her voice still echoed through the mansion.

"I didn't steal anything! Please... you've got the wrong person!"

Standing on the marble steps, Victoria Ashford folded her arms across her designer coat.

"Finally," she muttered with a satisfied smile. "That problem is gone."

She believed everything had gone exactly as planned.

She was wrong.

Inside a black SUV parked across the street, Daniel Ashford never looked away from the screen in his hand.

The home's security system automatically uploaded every camera feed to his encrypted cloud account whenever motion was detected after midnight. Victoria didn't know the feature existed because Daniel had installed it months earlier after several valuable antiques mysteriously disappeared.

He replayed the footage.

One camera overlooked the hallway leading to the family library.

At 11:47 p.m., Sofia entered carrying fresh towels, just as she'd done every evening for three years.

She cleaned the room.

She left.

Nothing unusual.

Exactly four minutes later, another figure quietly stepped into the library.

Victoria.

She wore black gloves.

She opened the antique desk drawer.

Carefully removed a velvet jewelry box.

Then walked directly toward Sofia's cleaning cart.

She slipped the priceless diamond necklace beneath a stack of folded towels.

Seconds later, she picked up her phone.

Daniel increased the volume.

"I need the police," Victoria whispered dramatically. "Our maid has stolen my grandmother's necklace."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

The footage continued.

Victoria even rehearsed fake tears before officers arrived.

Every movement was deliberate.

Every expression rehearsed.

Every accusation planned.

Daniel slammed the SUV door and sprinted toward the mansion.

Victoria turned as he climbed the front steps.

"Oh, you're home earlier than expected."

Without answering, Daniel shoved his phone inches from her face.

The smile disappeared instantly.

The color drained from her cheeks.

"N-no..."

The video kept playing.

There was nowhere left to hide.

"You planted the necklace," Daniel said quietly.

Victoria tried to laugh.

"This... this isn't what it looks like."

"It looks exactly like you framing an innocent woman."

She reached for the phone.

Daniel pulled it away.

"You called the police."

Silence.

"You lied."

More silence.

"You destroyed someone's life because you were jealous that my mother trusted her more than you."

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

"You don't understand..."

"No."

Daniel stared directly into her eyes.

"I understand perfectly."

He dialed one number.

"Detective Harris?"

May you like

"This is Daniel Ashford."

"You arrested the wrong person."
