Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden Behind the Armor

Chapter 2: The Truth Hidden Behind the Armor

The surgery lasted nearly five hours.

For Luca, it felt like five lifetimes.

He refused food.

Ignored every phone call.

Canceled meetings worth millions without explanation.

His men had never seen their boss pace.

Now he couldn't stop.

Every time the operating room doors moved, his heart nearly stopped.

Finally, the surgeon appeared.

Luca stood before the doctor even removed his mask.

"Is she alive?"

The surgeon smiled.

"Yes."

Luca's knees almost gave out.

"The surgery was successful."

"And the tumor?"

The doctor's smile faded.

"We've sent it for pathology. It'll take forty-eight hours."

Those forty-eight hours became the longest of Luca's life.

Anna woke in recovery feeling exhausted.

The first face she saw was Luca's.

He hadn't left.

Not once.

"You look terrible," she whispered.

He chuckled softly.

"So I've been told."

"You stayed?"

"I promised I was coming."

"You could've gone home."

He shook his head.

"My home is wherever you are."

Anna stared at him.

He had never spoken like this before.

Not once in three years.

Later that evening, she finally asked the question that had haunted her throughout their relationship.

"Why wouldn't you let me love all of you?"

Luca looked toward the window.

"When I was eleven..."

His voice nearly disappeared.

"I watched my father die."

Anna remained silent.

"He pushed me into a closet before they came."

Luca swallowed hard.

"He told me not to come out."

His hands trembled.

"I listened."

Outside, rain tapped softly against the hospital window.

"I heard everything."

Anna slowly reached for his hand.

"They killed him because he loved us."

He closed his eyes.

"My mother."

"My sister."

"My father refused to give them up."

His breathing became uneven.

"I decided that night love makes people targets."

Anna finally understood.

Every wall.

Every secret.

Every sleepless night.

Every gun beneath the pillow.

Every distance he forced between them.

He hadn't been protecting himself.

He had been trying to protect her.

But somewhere along the way...

Protection had become loneliness.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I loved you the only way I knew."

Anna squeezed his hand.

"And I left because I needed to feel chosen... not just protected."

For the first time...

They both understood each other.

Two days later, pathology results finally arrived.

The surgeon entered smiling.

"It's benign."

Anna burst into tears.

Luca covered his face with both hands before laughing through his own tears.

Neither of them noticed the nurse quietly crying in the doorway.

Sometimes the happiest endings happened inside hospital rooms.
