Chapter 1: The Man Who Feared Nothing Finally Felt Fear

Anna closed her eyes as another wave of pain twisted through her abdomen.

"I'm... at Brooklyn Methodist," she whispered.

Silence.

Then Luca's voice turned frighteningly calm.

"What room?"

"Four... seventeen."

"I'm coming."

The line went dead.

Anna stared at her phone.

No questions.

No accusations.

No anger over the six months she had disappeared.

Just three words.

I'm coming.

Exactly twelve minutes later, the hallway outside Room 417 erupted into controlled chaos.

Two security guards instinctively stepped aside.

Nurses stopped talking.

Doctors glanced toward the elevators as six men in dark suits emerged first, silently checking every corner before the last elevator doors opened again.

Luca Marino walked out alone.

His charcoal overcoat was still unbuttoned, his tie slightly crooked—the first sign Anna had ever seen that he had rushed anywhere.

He entered the room and stopped.

For a moment, the most feared man in New York simply looked at her.

She looked smaller.

Paler.

The confident woman who once filled his penthouse with laughter now seemed to disappear beneath the hospital blanket.

His chest tightened.

"You've lost weight," he said quietly.

Anna managed a weak smile.

"Hello to you too."

He walked closer but hesitated before touching her, as if afraid she might disappear again.

"I didn't know."

"I know."

"If I had—"

"I know."

Those two words carried six months of unfinished conversations.

Luca finally reached for her hand.

It felt colder than he remembered.

"When did this start?"

"A few months ago."

"You should've called."

Anna looked at him.

"I left because I didn't want to depend on you anymore."

"You never depended on me."

She almost laughed.

"Luca... you had people choosing my restaurants before I even knew where I wanted dinner."

"You deserved the best."

"I deserved a partner."

The words landed harder than any bullet.

For the first time in years, Luca Marino had no answer.

An hour later, the attending surgeon entered with fresh scan results.

"I'm afraid we need surgery tomorrow morning."

Anna swallowed.

"So it's cancer?"

"We still don't know. The mass has to come out before we can determine whether it's malignant."

Luca stood immediately.

"Whatever she needs, she gets."

The doctor nodded politely.

"I assure you she'll receive the same care as every patient."

"No," Luca replied.

"She gets better."

The doctor smiled carefully.

"We'll do everything medically possible."

After he left, Luca remained standing beside the window.

Anna watched him.

He looked... shaken.

Not angry.

Not dangerous.

Scared.

She had never seen him scared.

That night, she woke around two in the morning.

The room was dark except for the hallway light spilling through the cracked door.

Luca sat beside her bed.

Still wearing the same suit.

Still awake.

His elbows rested on his knees while his hands covered his face.

She had never seen him cry.

Until now.

A single tear slipped through his fingers before disappearing onto the floor.

He quickly wiped it away, believing she was asleep.

Anna quietly closed her eyes again.

For the first time...

She realized the strongest man she had ever known had been breaking in silence all along.
