Chapter 3: The Woman Who Saved a Life

The private emergency wing was already waiting when Adrian's convoy arrived.

Doctors rushed the baby into surgery.

Emma stood outside the operating room, her hands still shaking.

She had only been a waitress.

She had never imagined ending her shift inside one of Chicago's most heavily guarded hospitals.

Nearly an hour later, the chief pediatric surgeon walked out.

"He'll recover."

Adrian released a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding.

"The needle delivered a slow-acting sedative," the doctor explained. "Another hour, and his breathing could have stopped."

Silence filled the hallway.

The doctor continued.

"Whoever noticed the injection saved his life."

Every pair of eyes turned toward Emma.

Adrian walked over.

"I owe you more than I can repay."

Emma shook her head.

"I just listened to a baby who needed help."

Before Adrian could respond, one of his security officers interrupted.

"We found something."

He handed Adrian a tablet.

The security footage had finally been restored.

Everyone watched.

Sofia, the nanny, was clearly visible placing the baby into his stroller.

Then another employee entered the nursery.

Not a nurse.

Not a family member.

A man wearing the uniform of the restaurant's maintenance staff.

He leaned over the stroller for only three seconds.

Three seconds.

Long enough to slide the needle into the baby's clothing.

Then he disappeared through a service hallway.

The employee records showed only one problem.

No one by that name had ever worked there.
