Chapter 2: The Needle Beneath the Blanket
Adrian didn't ask questions.
He reached Emma in two long strides.
"What did you find?"
Emma carefully turned the baby onto his side. Her fingers slid beneath the expensive cashmere blanket until they stopped.
"There."
She pulled away a tiny object.
A thin medical needle.
Still attached to a nearly invisible plastic tube hidden inside the baby's designer outfit.
The entire dining room gasped.
The baby's skin around the puncture was turning red.
"He's been jabbed," Emma said. "That's why he wouldn't stop crying."
Adrian's face hardened.
"Who dressed him today?"
One bodyguard answered immediately.
"His nanny, Sofia."
Before anyone could react, another guard sprinted back from the security office.
"Boss."
His breathing was uneven.
"The security cameras glitched for exactly forty-seven seconds."
Adrian didn't need to hear the rest.
"They were hacked."
Emma gently rocked the baby while checking his breathing.
"He needs a hospital now."
"No."
Several people stared at Adrian.
"If this was intentional, whoever did it expects us to go to the hospital."
Emma looked directly into his eyes.
"And if you don't, your son could die."
For the first time anyone could remember...
Adrian Romano hesitated.
