CHAPTER 3 — THE EMPIRE STARTS TO CRACK

CHAPTER 3 — THE EMPIRE STARTS TO CRACK
The silence that followed wasn’t empty.
It was violent.
Coraline’s voice broke first.
“You can’t be serious.”
Garrett didn’t look at her.
“I am.”
Her expression hardened into disbelief, then rage.
“Garrett Hail, you are standing here abandoning a union that holds two families, three territories, and a decade of negotiations—because of a woman who left you and a child you don’t even know is yours—”
“I know she’s mine,” he interrupted.
That shut everything down.
Even the rain seemed to hesitate.
Mave stood still, like she was bracing for impact that had been building for years.
Coraline’s face tightened.
“You think this ends cleanly?”
Garrett finally turned to her.
And when he did, there was nothing soft left in his expression.
“No,” he said. “It ends honestly.”
A flicker of something dangerous crossed Coraline’s eyes.
“You’re making a mistake.”
“No,” Garrett said quietly. “I made one three years ago.”
He took a step back.
Then another.
Away from Coraline.
Away from the convoy.
Away from the empire waiting behind him.
And toward Mave.
Posie watched him approach, unsure, her small fingers curling into her mother’s coat.
Garrett stopped a foot away.
He lowered himself slowly.
So he was at her eye level.
The city noise faded.
Everything narrowed to this fragile, impossible moment.
“Hi,” he said softly.
Posie blinked.
Mave held her breath.
Garrett swallowed.
“I’m… Garrett.”
The child studied him carefully, like she was solving something too big for her age.
Then she whispered:
“Are you the man Mommy cries about when she thinks I’m sleeping?”
Mave closed her eyes immediately.
“Posie—”
But Garrett raised a hand gently.
“It’s okay.”
His voice broke on the words.
Something inside him finally gave way.
Not power.
Not control.
But years he didn’t know he had lost.
He looked up at Mave.
“You were right to run,” he said quietly. “But you should’ve taken me with you.”
Mave’s voice shook.
“I didn’t think I had the right.”
Garrett stood slowly.
Then extended his hand—not to her.
To Posie.
The little girl hesitated.
Then slowly placed her small hand into his.
The moment they touched, something irreversible settled into place.
Not a reunion.
A beginning.
Behind them, sirens echoed in the distance.
Not police.
Not ambulance.
Something worse.
Wesley stepped closer again.
“Boss… the Ashfords are calling in their men.”
Garrett didn’t look away from his daughter.
“Let them.”
Coraline’s voice cut through one final time.
“You’re going to burn everything for them?”
Garrett finally turned his head.
And for the first time, Coraline saw it clearly.
She had already lost.
“No,” he said calmly. “I’m burning everything I built on lies.”
He looked back at Mave.
Then Posie.
And made the final decision that would fracture New York’s underworld for years to come.
“From this moment,” Garrett said, voice steady now, “no one touches them.”
A pause.
Then softer:
“No one.”
The rain kept falling.
But for the first time that morning…
Garrett Hail didn’t feel cold.
Because something far more dangerous than his empire had just awakened.
Something human.
May you like
Something he had buried long ago.
A father.
