That night Daniel sat beside Lily's hospital bed.
A pediatric nurse carefully wrapped fresh bandages around her tiny hands.
"She'll heal," the doctor assured him.
"But emotional wounds take longer."
Daniel never looked away from his daughter.
"I know."
When Lily finally opened her eyes, she looked frightened.
"Am I in trouble?"
Daniel's heart broke all over again.
He leaned forward and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face.
"Lily..."
"You have never been the problem."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I thought if I cleaned better..."

Daniel covered his face for a moment.
He realized how many birthdays...
School plays...
Bedtime stories...
He had missed while chasing another business deal.
He took both of her bandaged hands.
"I'm so sorry."
"I failed to see what was happening."

Weeks turned into months.
Daniel reduced his work schedule.
Every morning he walked Lily to school.
Every evening they cooked dinner together.
On weekends they visited Emma's favorite park, where they laughed instead of cried.
Lily slowly smiled again.
The nightmares became less frequent.
The house once filled with fear became a home again.
One year later, Daniel established the Emma Carter Foundation, providing legal assistance, counseling, and emergency shelter for children suffering from abuse by caregivers.
At the opening ceremony, Lily stood beside her father wearing a bright yellow dress and holding his hand tightly.
A reporter asked Daniel what inspired the foundation.
He looked down at his daughter before answering.
"The strongest person I've ever met isn't a billionaire or a politician."
"It's a little girl who survived when she should have only been worrying about toys and bedtime stories."
Lily squeezed his hand.
Daniel smiled.
Then he looked into the cameras.
"Children don't need perfect homes."
"They need adults willing to protect them."
Lily rested her head against his shoulder.
