Chapter 1 – The Truth Behind the Marble Floors

Chapter 1 – The Truth Behind the Marble Floors

The grand foyer fell into complete silence.

Only the little girl's uneven breathing could be heard.

"Daddy..."

Six-year-old Lily struggled to stand, but her knees were too weak. She nearly fell before her father, Daniel Carter, rushed forward and caught her in his arms.

The moment he took her tiny hands into his own, his chest tightened.

They were covered with blisters.

The skin had cracked open in several places.

Fresh soap burns stained her fingertips.

Daniel looked down at her with horror.

"Lily... who did this to you?"

She lowered her eyes.

"I tried to clean like Miss Vanessa told me."

Vanessa immediately forced a nervous smile.

"Daniel, you're misunderstanding everything."

"I simply asked her to wipe up the juice she spilled."

"She became dramatic."

Daniel slowly stood, still holding Lily against his chest.

His voice became frighteningly calm.

"So you're telling me... these hands came from wiping up juice?"

Vanessa laughed awkwardly.

"Children exaggerate."

Before Daniel answered, Lily whispered against his shoulder.

"I've been cleaning since breakfast."

"I wasn't allowed to eat until the floor looked perfect."

Daniel froze.

"What did you just say?"

Lily hesitated.

"I was hungry."

"But Miss Vanessa said lazy girls don't deserve lunch."

Daniel's face lost every trace of warmth.

He turned toward the dining room.

On the table sat two untouched steaks...

A bottle of expensive wine...

Fresh fruit...

Dessert...

Meanwhile his daughter looked pale enough to faint.

His stomach turned.

He had trusted Vanessa.

After his wife Emma died three years earlier, Daniel had buried himself in work.

Vanessa had seemed caring.

Patient.

Kind.

She volunteered to help raise Lily.

He believed she loved his daughter.

Now every memory suddenly looked different.

Lily flinching whenever Vanessa entered the room.

The sudden weight loss.

The quietness.

The nightmares.

Daniel had ignored every warning.

Never again.

He gently kissed Lily's forehead.

"Sweetheart..."

"You'll never scrub another floor again."

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

"Go wait in my office."

She tried to smile.

"We can discuss this privately."

"No."

His voice echoed through the mansion.

"We're done hiding."
