Chapter 1: The Truth Behind the Tears

Daniel Carter never raised his voice.

He didn't need to.

Still kneeling beside his daughter, he carefully wrapped his hand around her tiny, trembling fingers. The blisters covering her palms were fresh, some already broken and bleeding. His jaw tightened as he noticed bruises around her wrists—marks that no child should ever carry.

"Who did this to you?" he asked softly.

Emily glanced fearfully at the woman standing across the foyer.

"My stepmom... said I had to clean the whole house because I spilled a little juice yesterday."

Victoria forced a nervous smile.

"Daniel, she's exaggerating. Children always make things sound worse than they are."

Daniel slowly stood.

For a long moment, he simply stared at his wife.

Then he asked one question.

"Did you force my seven-year-old daughter to scrub this mansion for hours?"

Victoria laughed awkwardly.

"I was teaching her responsibility."

Daniel's eyes never left hers.

"Responsibility doesn't leave a child bleeding."

He picked Emily up into his arms.

She instinctively buried her face against his shoulder, something she hadn't done in months because Victoria had warned her never to "act like a baby."

Daniel whispered,

"You never have to be afraid again."

He carried Emily straight to the car and drove to the children's hospital, leaving Victoria standing alone in the silent mansion.

She still believed she could explain everything.

She had no idea her nightmare had only begun.
