Chapter 13: The Hidden Room

The silence inside the vault felt almost unreal.
Samuel stared at the old intercom speaker mounted high on the concrete wall.
His lips trembled.
"No..."
He slowly shook his head.
"That's impossible."
Victoria knelt beside him.
"You recognized the voice."
Samuel nodded, tears streaming down his face.
"I'd recognize my son's voice anywhere."
Richard remained cautious.
"Or someone wants you to believe it's your son."
Samuel looked up.
"No."
"There are things in a father's heart that can't be fooled."
He closed his eyes.
"That was Daniel."
Victoria wanted to believe him.
But too many lies had already been uncovered that night.
"Then why hasn't he come forward all these years?"
Samuel didn't have an answer.
Richard examined the ancient intercom mounted above the vault entrance.
"It's too old to connect to any modern system."
One of the firefighters stepped closer.
"Unless..."
He removed the metal cover.
Everyone leaned in.
Fresh wiring.
New circuit boards.
Recently installed.
Richard frowned.
"This equipment isn't thirty years old."
The firefighter nodded.
"It was upgraded."
"Very recently."
Samuel slowly stood.
"Someone expected us to come here."
Victoria's heartbeat quickened.
"Daniel?"
Samuel looked uncertain.
"I don't know."
Richard traced the new wires with his flashlight.
"They disappear into the wall."
He looked at the firefighters.
"Can we follow them?"
One firefighter tapped gently on the concrete.
A hollow sound echoed back.
"This wall isn't solid."
Richard looked at Samuel.
"You knew?"
Samuel shook his head.
"I knew there used to be maintenance corridors."
"But not this."
The firefighters began searching the wall.
One of them noticed an unusual brass plate near the floor.
"No screws."
"No hinges."
Richard crouched beside it.
"It's a pressure latch."
He pressed firmly.
A deep mechanical click echoed through the chamber.
Everyone stepped back.
Slowly...
Almost silently...
A section of the concrete wall slid sideways.
A narrow passage appeared.
Cold air drifted out.
Emily's voice suddenly echoed in Victoria's memory.
"Why would anyone hide a hallway?"
Victoria whispered to herself,
"Because they were protecting something."
The passage was narrow but well preserved.
Battery-powered emergency lights illuminated the ceiling every twenty feet.
Someone had maintained this place.
Recently.
Richard looked around carefully.
"There isn't even any dust."
Samuel ran his hand along the wall.
"I've never seen this tunnel before."
"It wasn't on the blueprints."
Victoria followed slowly behind them, still carrying her father's journal.
The corridor stretched nearly a hundred yards before ending at a thick steel door.
Unlike the old vault, this door looked modern.
A small keypad glowed beside it.
Richard frowned.
"That's new."
Samuel examined it.
"No keyhole."
Victoria looked down at the brass key from Box 317.
"It won't fit."
Richard noticed something engraved beneath the keypad.
AUTHORIZED FAMILY ACCESS ONLY
Victoria read the words twice.
"Family..."
Samuel looked at her.
"I think your father planned for this."
Richard stepped aside.
"Try it."
Victoria approached the keypad.
The screen suddenly came to life.
IDENTIFY USER
She hesitated.
"What do I do?"
Samuel pointed toward a small glass panel beside the screen.
"A fingerprint scanner."
Victoria slowly placed her right hand against it.
The scanner flashed blue.
A soft electronic tone filled the hallway.
Then...
ACCESS DENIED
Victoria frowned.
"It didn't work."
Richard looked closer.
"Wait."
A second message appeared.
SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED
Samuel's eyes widened.
"There were two creators."
Victoria looked confused.
"My father..."
"And someone else."
Richard thought for a moment.
"Whoever helped build this place."
The three of them stood in silence.
Then Samuel suddenly froze.
"My son."
Victoria looked at him.
"Daniel?"
Samuel nodded.
"He apprenticed with your father."
"He was only a teenager."
"But he helped install security systems."
Richard looked toward the locked door.
"So if Daniel is alive..."
Samuel finished the sentence.
"...he can open it."
Just then, a faint sound echoed through the passage.
Footsteps.
Not behind them.
Ahead.
Beyond the locked steel door.
Victoria instinctively stepped back.
Richard raised his flashlight.
The footsteps grew louder.
Slow.
Steady.
Until they stopped on the opposite side of the door.
Then came three gentle knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The same pattern from Richard's office.
Everyone held their breath.
A man's voice came through a small speaker hidden in the wall.
Calm.
Measured.
Older than before.
"Victoria."
She swallowed.
"Who are you?"
A brief silence followed.
Then the man answered.
"You've spent your whole life searching for your father's truth."
Victoria gripped the journal tightly.
"Yes."
"Then you're standing one door away from it."
Richard stepped closer.
"If you're Daniel..."
The man interrupted.
"I never said I was Daniel."
Samuel's face fell.
"But I know exactly where he is."
Victoria felt her pulse racing.
"Tell us."
"I will."
Another pause.
"But first..."
The keypad beside the door suddenly lit up again.
A new message appeared on the screen.
FINAL AUTHORIZATION AVAILABLE
Below it, a single line of text slowly typed itself across the display.
ENTER YOUR FATHER'S LAST WORDS
Victoria's heart pounded.
She looked helplessly at Samuel.
"My father never spoke to me before he disappeared."
Samuel closed his eyes.
"I don't know them."
Richard looked at the journal.
"Maybe he wrote them."
Victoria frantically turned page after page.
Nothing.
Then, tucked into the back cover, she discovered a tiny folded note she had overlooked.
She carefully unfolded it.
There were only six handwritten words.
She read them aloud.
"The truth is worth everything."
The keypad immediately beeped.
Green lights illuminated the hallway.
The heavy steel door slowly began to unlock.
As it opened just a few inches...
May you like
A voice from inside quietly said,
"Welcome home, Victoria."
