Chapter 11: Locked Inside

Chapter 11: Locked Inside

The thunderous clang of the vault door echoed through the underground chamber.

Then came another sound.

Click.

Click.

Click.

One by one, the heavy steel locking bolts slid into place.

The silence that followed was almost worse.

Victoria instinctively pulled the metal drawer from Box 317 closer to her.

Emily's future.

Her mother's letter.

Her father's journal.

Everything her family had protected for decades was now in her hands.

Richard immediately crossed the room and gripped the vault door.

He pushed with all his strength.

Nothing.

The door didn't move an inch.

"It's locked," he said quietly.

Samuel closed his eyes.

"They know we're here."

A firefighter rushed toward the emergency phone mounted on the wall.

"It's dead."

Richard frowned.

"The fire must have damaged the line."

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"No."

He pointed toward the neatly cut cable hanging beneath the phone.

"Someone cut it."

The firefighter crouched beside it.

"He's right."

"This wasn't the fire."

Victoria looked around the vault.

"There has to be another exit."

Samuel hesitated.

"There is."

Richard turned sharply.

"You've known that this whole time?"

"I wasn't certain it still existed."

"Where?"

Samuel pointed toward the back wall behind several rows of abandoned safety deposit boxes.

"Years ago, there was an emergency escape tunnel."

The firefighters immediately began moving the heavy cabinets aside.

Dust filled the air.

One cabinet after another scraped across the concrete floor.

Finally, a narrow steel door appeared.

Hope spread across every face.

One firefighter grabbed the handle.

It refused to move.

He tried again.

Still nothing.

"It's welded shut."

Richard stepped forward.

"Welded?"

The firefighter ran his flashlight around the edges.

"Recently."

Fresh metal.

Fresh grinding marks.

Someone had sealed it from the outside.

Samuel whispered,

"They've been preparing for this."

Victoria felt anger replacing fear.

"Who?"

Samuel looked directly at her.

"I don't know their names anymore."

"But I know how they work."

"They remove every escape."

Richard looked toward the vault entrance.

"And trap people exactly where they want them."

Victoria took a deep breath.

"We're wasting time."

She looked at the leather journal.

"My father wanted me to find this."

She carefully opened it.

The first page contained only one sentence.

If you're reading this, I failed to come home.

Victoria's vision blurred.

She slowly turned the page.

The handwriting was neat and precise.

It was unmistakably her father's.

Victoria,

If this journal has reached you, then someone finally kept their promise.

Before you believe anything you've ever been told about me...

Know this.

I never abandoned you.

A tear slipped down Victoria's cheek.

She had spent twenty years believing her father had disappeared by choice.

Every birthday.

Every Christmas.

Every milestone.

She had wondered why he never came back.

Now, in a single sentence...

Everything she believed began to crumble.

Richard quietly stepped beside her.

"What does it say?"

Victoria handed him the journal.

He continued reading aloud.

They will call me a traitor.

They will accuse me of stealing government secrets.

Neither accusation is true.

I discovered something that powerful people wanted buried forever.

I refused to help them.

That decision cost our family everything.

The room became silent again.

Samuel wiped away a tear.

"I told him not to fight them."

Victoria looked at him.

"What did he discover?"

Samuel slowly sat down.

"I don't know."

"He never told me."

"He said the less I knew..."

"...the longer I'd survive."

Richard turned another page.

A folded blueprint slipped onto the floor.

One of the firefighters picked it up.

"This isn't a building."

Richard examined it.

"No."

"It's a map."

Victoria leaned closer.

The map showed part of the downtown area.

Several streets had been marked in red.

One location was circled repeatedly.

Richard frowned.

"What is this place?"

Samuel looked once.

Then his face turned white.

"Oh no..."

Victoria followed his gaze.

"What?"

Samuel pointed to the circled address.

"That's not where something happened."

Richard looked at him.

"Then what is it?"

Samuel answered quietly.

"It's where your father hid the evidence."

Suddenly...

A loud scraping noise echoed from the other side of the vault door.

Everyone froze.

Someone was outside.

Heavy footsteps.

Then voices.

Muffled.

Impossible to understand.

Richard motioned for everyone to stay silent.

The footsteps stopped.

A flashlight beam briefly appeared beneath the narrow gap at the bottom of the door.

Someone was standing directly outside.

Waiting.

Victoria's heartbeat pounded in her ears.

No one dared breathe.

Then a man's voice echoed faintly through the thick steel.

"I know you're in there."

The room went perfectly still.

The voice continued.

"You've already found the journal."

Samuel's eyes widened.

He recognized the voice.

His hands began to tremble.

Richard noticed immediately.

"You know him."

Samuel nodded slowly.

"I prayed..."

His voice cracked.

"...that I'd never hear that voice again."

Outside the vault, the man laughed.

A calm...

Patient...

Terrifying laugh.

Then he spoke one final sentence.

"Victoria..."

She froze.

"I've been waiting thirty-five years to meet you."

The footsteps slowly faded away.

But before leaving...

The stranger slid something through the narrow gap beneath the vault door.

A yellowed newspaper clipping.

Victoria picked it up.

The headline stole the breath from her lungs.

ARCHITECT JAMES CARTER DECLARED DEAD AFTER TREASON INVESTIGATION

Below the headline was a photograph.

Her father.

May you like

And stamped across the front in bold red letters was a single word.

LIAR.
