THE LADY THEY ERASED / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Vanishing Hour.

The photograph changed Claire from a witness into a target with a history.

That was exactly what whoever sent it wanted.

Maya had the image examined before anyone discussed it outside the townhouse.

The first result came quickly.

The photograph was real.

The second result came an hour later.

The woman in the gray coat was not Claire.

Facial-comparison software found differences in jaw structure, ear position, and height.

Someone had selected a woman who resembled her from a distance.

Someone had dressed that woman to resemble Claire.

Someone had then placed her near Noah weeks before the ballroom incident.

James stared at the forensic report.

"They were preparing to frame Claire before Noah ever ran to her."

Maya shook her head.

"Not necessarily."

"What else could it mean?"

"It could mean they were preparing a substitute narrative for whoever Noah chose."

Claire frowned.

"I don't understand."

Maya pointed at the photograph.

"You work events at the hotel regularly."

Claire nodded.

"So do dozens of people."

"But you volunteered at the library's after-school reading program last year."

Claire stared at her.

"How do you know that?"

"Your public profile."

Claire felt exposed.

Maya continued.

"You also took two undergraduate courses in child development before switching majors."

"I never finished college."

"That doesn't matter."

Maya folded the report.

"If someone wanted to build a story that James recruited a sympathetic caregiver to influence Noah, you were useful."

James looked furious.

"Why her?"

Maya's answer was blunt.

"Because she was ordinary enough to look accidental and credible enough to look planned."

Claire hated how logical it sounded.

Noah entered the room holding his cardboard spaceship.

The adults stopped talking.

He looked at their faces.

"What happened?"

James forced his expression to soften.

"Nothing you need to fix."

Noah considered that.

"Rachel says adults say that when they don't want kids to worry."

Claire almost smiled.

"Rachel is smart."

Noah placed the spaceship on the table.

"Can we go outside?"

James looked at security through the glass doors.

"In the garden."

Noah frowned.

"That's not outside outside."

"Today it is."

Noah sighed with the dramatic disappointment only a six-year-old could make look reasonable.

"Fine."

Claire took him into the enclosed courtyard while James remained with Maya and Daniel.

Daniel had postponed his trip to Virginia after local authorities located Richard Mercer's car near the marina.

The vehicle was empty.

Inside were two bottles of water, a folded map, and a receipt from a gas station twelve miles away.

No sign of Richard.

No sign of Adrian.

At eleven-fifteen, Rachel arrived for Noah's scheduled interview.

At eleven-thirty, James joined by court permission for a family session.

At noon, Claire left the townhouse with Maya to meet investigators about the bracelet.

Everything was documented.

Every movement had a timestamp.

That was why what happened next seemed impossible.

At 12:42 p.m., the townhouse security system recorded Noah leaving through the rear gate.

At 12:43, the camera showed him entering a black SUV.

At 12:44, the vehicle drove east.

James was in the library with Rachel when security alerted him.

He stood so fast the chair overturned.

"Where is Noah?"

Rachel stared at him.

"Upstairs with the caregiver."

James was already moving.

They reached Noah's room in seconds.

The room was empty.

The caregiver stood in the adjoining bathroom, pale and shaking.

"He said he needed his blue sweater."

James looked around.

"How long ago?"

"Maybe three minutes."

Security locked down the property.

Daniel called police.

Rachel called the court.

James called Claire.

She answered on the first ring.

"What happened?"

"Noah is gone."

Silence.

Then Claire's voice changed.

"What do you mean gone?"

"He walked out the rear gate and got into an SUV."

"Did he go willingly?"

James looked at the security monitor.

The video showed Noah walking beside a woman in a dark coat.

He was not struggling.

He was holding her hand.

The angle hid her face.

"It looks like he knew her."

Claire's mind moved immediately to Vivian.

"Was it her?"

"We can't see."

Maya took the phone.

"James, do not chase the vehicle yourself."

"I'm not waiting here."

"Then go to the security office and help identify the route."

"Maya."

"If you turn this into a reckless pursuit, Vivian's attorney will use it before Noah is even found."

James hated her for being right.

He went downstairs.

The black SUV's plate was visible for one frame.

Police traced it to a rental company.

The renter name was fake.

The credit card used to reserve it belonged to Northstar Advisory Group.

James stared at the screen.

"Adrian."

Daniel's phone rang.

Virginia authorities had found Richard Mercer.

He was alive.

He had been sitting in a marina office for nearly three hours waiting to speak with investigators.

Daniel closed his eyes in relief.

Then the officer on the line told him why Richard had gone there.

He had arranged to meet Adrian.

Adrian never appeared.

Richard had brought documents he had hidden for years.

Those documents showed Adrian creating Northstar Advisory Group.

They also showed Vivian receiving consulting payments.

But Richard had one more fact.

Adrian had called him the previous night.

He said if Richard spoke, "the child would become the story."

James heard Daniel repeat the sentence.

His face changed.

"He took Noah."

Daniel held up a hand.

"We don't know that."

"He threatened my son."

"He threatened to use Noah as leverage."

"That's the same thing."

"No."

Daniel stepped closer.

"And right now precision matters."

The police found the SUV at 1:18 p.m.

It was parked outside the public library near Claire's apartment.

James's stomach dropped.

Claire was already three blocks away with Maya when she heard.

"The library?"

Maya looked at her.

"The same one from the photograph."

Claire's pulse quickened.

They reached the block after police established a perimeter.

James arrived minutes later.

He ignored the reporters gathering across the street and went straight to the command officer.

"Is he inside?"

"We believe so."

"With who?"

"Unknown adult female."

Claire stared at the front windows.

Then she remembered something from her volunteer year.

"There's a children's reading room in the basement."

The officer looked at her.

"Separate exit?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Alley side."

Officers moved immediately.

Two minutes later, the basement exit opened.

A woman stepped out holding Noah's hand.

She had blonde hair.

Hotel jacket.

The same face from the gala photograph.

Laura Kane.

Lauren Kent.

Whatever her name really was.

Officers surrounded her.

She did not resist.

Noah looked confused rather than terrified.

When he saw James, he stopped walking.

James did not rush him.

He waited.

Noah released the woman's hand.

Then he ran.

This time he ran to his father.

James dropped to his knees and caught him.

For several seconds he could not speak.

Noah held his neck.

"She said Claire needed me."

James closed his eyes.

"Claire is right there."

Noah looked over.

Claire lifted one hand.

"I'm okay."

His face crumpled with relief.

The blonde woman watched them with an expression that was almost blank.

Maya approached the lead detective.

"Who is she?"

The detective checked the identification taken from the woman's bag.

"Real name is Laura Mercer."

Daniel, who had just arrived, stopped cold.

"Mercer?"

The detective looked at him.

"You know her?"

Daniel stared at the woman.

His face lost color.

"She's my sister."

James slowly stood with Noah in his arms.

Daniel looked from Laura to the child, unable to reconcile what he was seeing.

"Laura died twelve years ago."

The detective frowned.

"Apparently not."

Laura finally spoke.

Her voice was calm.

"Daniel."

He took one step back.

"Who are you?"

She almost smiled.

"You always did believe what Dad told you."

Richard Mercer's hidden ledger suddenly seemed less like the deepest family secret in the case.

Laura looked at James next.

"If you want to know who built the false medical reports, ask Vivian who paid for my new name."

May you like

Then she looked at Claire.

"And if you want to know why Noah was supposed to choose you, ask yourself who gave you the gala shift."
