THE LADY THEY ERASED / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Camera That Blinked.

By morning, the ballroom footage had already become evidence.

The Whitmore Foundation owned the hotel wing where the gala had been held, and every service corridor, loading entrance, elevator lobby, and reception hall was covered by security cameras.

James expected the recordings to clarify what had happened.

Instead, the first file created another problem.

At 8:14 a.m., Daniel arrived at the townhouse carrying two laptops and a cardboard box of printed records.

Rachel Monroe was already there.

Noah was upstairs with a court-approved caregiver and had refused breakfast until Claire promised she would eat toast with him.

Claire had not planned to return after the previous night.

She had gone home at nearly two in the morning, changed clothes, slept for less than four hours, and awakened to three missed calls from the hotel.

The first was from Lena Ortiz.

The second was from hotel security.

The third was from a number she did not recognize.

That third caller left no message.

When Claire called Lena back, her supervisor sounded unusually careful.

"Don't come through the employee entrance."

Claire sat upright in bed.

"Why?"

"Someone from a gossip site is outside."

"About last night?"

"About you."

Claire closed her eyes.

"How do they even know my name?"

"I was hoping you could tell me."

By seven-thirty, a photograph of Claire shielding Noah had appeared online.

The caption called her an "unknown employee at the center of a Whitmore custody dispute."

A second post went further.

It claimed she had been "personally recruited" by James days before the gala.

That was false.

Claire had never met James before the previous night.

By eight, the hotel had temporarily removed her name from the event staffing roster for her safety.

James learned about it from Daniel.

His reaction was immediate.

"Who leaked her name?"

"We're tracing it."

"Trace faster."

Daniel gave him a flat look.

"That's not a legal strategy."

"It's an instruction."

"Then instruct your anger to become useful."

James almost snapped back.

Then he stopped himself.

Noah was in the next room.

Claire was at the kitchen island opening a yogurt for him.

James lowered his voice.

"Fine."

Daniel turned one laptop around.

"Start here."

The ballroom video played without sound.

It showed Claire at the buffet station.

It showed Noah running from the center of the room.

It showed him clinging to Claire.

It showed Vivian approaching.

Then, exactly four seconds before Vivian raised her hand, the image froze.

The timestamp jumped.

When the video resumed, Vivian was already on the marble floor.

James stared at the screen.

"Where is the middle?"

"Deleted."

"By whom?"

"The system logs say the camera lost connection."

"For four seconds?"

"Four point eight."

James leaned closer.

"Convenient."

Daniel opened a second file from a ceiling camera on the opposite side of the ballroom.

The same gap appeared.

A third camera had been angled away by a motorized maintenance command eleven minutes before the confrontation.

Claire entered with Noah just as Daniel replayed the clip.

She stopped.

"That's not what happened."

Daniel looked at her.

"Which part?"

"The gap."

"We know."

"No."

Claire pointed.

"The camera angle."

She stepped closer to the screen.

"That camera was facing the buffet all night."

Daniel nodded.

"The system says it rotated at 9:41."

Claire thought back.

"I was carrying a tray past that column around then."

"Did you see anyone near the camera controls?"

"No."

"The controls are remote."

Claire frowned.

"Then why does it matter where I was?"

Daniel tapped the screen.

"Because the maintenance command came from a tablet registered to banquet operations."

Claire felt a chill.

"Lena's tablet?"

"Your tablet."

She stared at him.

"I don't have a tablet."

"The device is assigned to station C-four."

Claire's station.

James watched her face.

"Could someone have used it?"

"There was one mounted under the buffet counter for inventory checks."

Claire remembered it now.

She had barely touched it.

"I logged in at the beginning of the shift."

Daniel nodded.

"Which means the command carries your employee credentials."

Claire's stomach tightened.

The lie online suddenly made more sense.

Someone was not merely spreading rumors.

Someone was building a record.

A record that made it look as if Claire had prepared the camera blind spot before Noah ran to her.

James saw the conclusion arrive on her face.

"They're trying to make it look planned."

Claire nodded.

"Like you hired me."

Daniel closed the video window.

"That is exactly what Vivian's attorney alleged in the emergency filing this morning."

Claire stared at him.

"She filed something about me?"

"She claims James staged the ballroom confrontation to influence the custody hearing."

"That's ridiculous."

"Ridiculous claims become less ridiculous when somebody manufactures supporting evidence."

James's voice hardened.

"Claire doesn't belong in this."

Daniel looked at him.

"She belonged in it the second Noah chose her in front of two hundred witnesses."

Claire folded her arms.

"Don't talk about me like I'm a piece of evidence."

Daniel paused.

"Fair."

He adjusted his tone.

"Ms. Bennett, I need your permission to have an independent forensic team examine your work account and the station tablet."

"Do it."

"You should have your own lawyer first."

Claire gave him a tired look.

"I make twenty-four dollars an hour plus event gratuity."

"The foundation will pay for independent counsel."

"Then it isn't independent."

Daniel almost smiled.

"That's the first intelligent objection I've heard this morning."

James reached for his phone.

"I know someone who doesn't work for us."

Claire raised a hand.

"No."

He stopped.

"No?"

"I appreciate what you're trying to do."

Claire kept her voice steady.

"But if this is about someone making me look like your employee or your accomplice, I don't want your lawyer, your money, or your people touching my side of it."

James studied her for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"Understood."

Claire expected him to argue.

He did not.

That made trusting him slightly easier.

Rachel entered the room with a file of her own.

"The hearing is at three."

James looked at her.

"Does Vivian get temporary control back?"

"Not automatically."

"But she can ask."

"She already did."

Rachel placed the file on the table.

"She also requested that Noah be placed with a neutral foster family until the dispute is resolved."

Noah had been drawing at the far end of the kitchen.

His pencil stopped.

Claire turned immediately.

Rachel realized he had heard.

She walked over and crouched beside him.

"Noah, nobody is moving you today."

"What's foster?"

Rachel answered carefully.

"It means staying with another safe family for a little while if a judge thinks adults need time to solve a problem."

Noah's face tightened.

"I don't want another family."

James moved one step toward him and stopped.

"You have me."

Noah looked at him.

"Do I?"

The question cut through every adult in the room.

James took the impact without defending himself.

"I'm going to prove that."

Noah looked down again.

"You said you called."

"I did."

"Can you prove that too?"

James nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel was already opening phone records.

The call logs were easy to obtain because James's mobile account was corporate-managed.

Every Sunday call was there.

6:00 p.m.

6:03 p.m.

6:07 p.m.

Sometimes six attempts in one evening.

There were also voice messages routed to Vivian's home number.

James looked at Noah.

"Would you like to hear one?"

Rachel intervened gently.

"Not before the hearing."

James's frustration flashed.

"Why?"

"Because Noah asked for proof, not persuasion."

She looked at the child.

"The records exist."

Noah nodded.

That seemed to matter.

Daniel's phone buzzed.

He read the message and frowned.

"The forensic team found something on the station tablet."

Claire walked closer.

"What?"

"The camera command was sent under your login."

Claire's face fell.

"I told you I didn't do it."

"I believe you."

Daniel lifted a hand.

"Because the login came from two places at the same time."

Claire stared.

"How?"

"Someone cloned your session."

"Can they tell where?"

Daniel read the message again.

"A device connected to the hotel's private executive network."

James looked up sharply.

Only senior event staff, foundation officers, and invited trustees had access to that network.

Vivian had access.

So had Adrian Cole.

Daniel kept reading.

"There's more."

"What?"

"The device identifier matches a tablet that belonged to Adrian's office."

James's expression went cold.

Claire felt a brief rush of relief.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed before he spoke.

"When?"

He listened.

"Don't touch anything."

James stood.

"What happened?"

Daniel ended the call.

"Adrian's office was cleared out overnight."

"By him?"

"We don't know."

"Security cameras?"

Daniel looked toward the laptop.

"That's the problem."

James understood before he finished.

"They blinked too."

Daniel nodded.

"For eleven minutes."

Rachel's phone vibrated next.

She read a message and looked at James.

"Vivian just submitted a new witness declaration."

James's jaw tightened.

"From whom?"

Rachel hesitated.

"Your former rehabilitation nurse."

"What does she say?"

Rachel looked toward Noah before lowering her voice.

"She says you repeatedly threatened to take Noah away from anyone who challenged you."

James stared at her.

"That's false."

"She also says Vivian was the only person who could calm you down."

James's expression darkened.

"What's the nurse's name?"

Rachel handed him the page.

He read it once.

Then twice.

"I never had a nurse named Laura Kane."

Daniel took the document.

At the bottom was a notarized signature.

Above it was a photograph of a woman wearing rehabilitation-center scrubs.

Claire looked over his shoulder.

She recognized the face.

Not from the hospital.

From the gala.

May you like

The woman had been standing three tables away when Vivian approached Noah.

And in the security footage, she was the last person seen touching Claire's station tablet before the camera turned away.
