Chapter 2 – The Reversal

The daughter takes a step back, confusion breaking into panic.
“What are you saying? I have the wristband—I—”
Her voice falters as she looks down at it again, suddenly unsure of something she was certain of only minutes ago.
The doctor speaks carefully. “The emergency intake records. The toxicology reports. The admission forms.”
He pauses.
“They all belong to Denise.”
The room tilts. The daughter grips the edge of the counter to steady herself.
Denise finally snaps. “Stop filling her head with lies!”
But her voice is weaker now—less authority, more fear.
The doctor turns to her. “You didn’t want her to know the diagnosis, so you rewrote the story. You told her she was sick. You told her she was the one collapsing.”
The daughter stares at her mother, searching her face like it’s unfamiliar.
“Mom… what diagnosis?”

Denise doesn’t answer.
That silence is the answer.
