Chapter 1 – The Truth Beneath the Illusion

The kitchen feels smaller now, suffocating under the weight of the doctor’s words.

The mother—Denise—freezes mid-motion, her hand still pressed on the table. For the first time, her eyes lift from the crossword puzzle. Not toward her daughter… but toward the man in scrubs with a sharp, warning stare.

“Don’t,” she says quietly. One word. Controlled. Dangerous.

The daughter’s breathing quickens. “What is he talking about?”

The doctor steps further into the room, calm but firm. “She told you she was keeping this family together. That you were the only one who could handle it.”

He turns slightly toward the daughter.

“That’s not true.”

A long silence follows. The ticking clock on the wall suddenly feels deafening.

Denise forces a bitter smile. “You came here to destroy what little stability she has left?”

But the doctor doesn’t flinch. “I came because you left out one detail when you were discharged today.”

The daughter’s eyes widen. “Discharged…? Mom, I was the one in the hospital.”

The doctor shakes his head slowly.

“No. You were never the patient.”
