Chapter 13: The Voice in the Darkness

"Mom?"

The word escaped my lips before I could stop it.

It echoed through the narrow stone tunnel.

For a long moment...

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

The only sounds were the distant explosions above us and the steady drip of water from the tunnel ceiling.

Then the voice came again.

Soft.

Gentle.

Older than I remembered from the cassette tape.

But unmistakable.

"Emily..."

"I'm here."

Tears blurred my vision.

I took a step forward.

Mercer immediately caught my arm.

"Wait."

"It's too dangerous."

"But that's her."

"I know."

He looked down the tunnel.

"And if it's really Sarah..."

"She'll understand why we're being careful."

Samuel Reed slowly raised a flashlight.

"I know this tunnel."

Everyone looked at him.

"It was part of an old mining system."

"There are dozens of side passages."

"Someone could easily use the echoes to disguise their location."

Mercer nodded.

"We verify first."

He motioned for two FBI agents to move ahead.

The agents disappeared into the darkness.

Seconds later...

One of them called back.

"Clear!"

Another voice followed.

"We found someone."

My heart raced.

I pushed past Mercer before he could stop me.

The tunnel opened into a small underground chamber.

A single lantern burned on a wooden table.

Beside it stood a woman.

She didn't move.

She simply looked at me.

Twenty-three years.

Twenty-three years of questions.

Twenty-three years of imagining this moment.

Her chestnut hair now carried streaks of silver.

Fine lines framed her eyes.

But those eyes...

They were the same warm hazel eyes I'd seen in every photograph.

She smiled through tears.

"My sweet girl."

I couldn't speak.

Neither could she.

Then...

She opened her arms.

I ran to her.

For the first time in my life...

I hugged my mother.

She held me so tightly I thought she might never let go.

"I'm sorry," she whispered over and over.

"I'm so sorry."

I buried my face against her shoulder.

"You came."

"I always planned to."

She gently brushed my hair back.

"I was just twenty-three years late."

Even Mercer quietly looked away, giving us a moment no one had the right to interrupt.

Several minutes later, we gathered around the old wooden table.

Sarah looked at every face in the room.

Margaret.

Samuel.

Mercer.

Then...

Ethan.

Her expression hardened.

"You brought him?"

Mercer answered calmly.

"He came willingly."

Sarah studied Ethan for several long seconds.

Finally she asked,

"Have you chosen a side?"

Ethan lowered his head.

"I have now."

Sarah didn't respond.

Instead, she turned back to me.

"I wish we had more time."

"What do you mean?"

"They're coming."

"The Circle?"

She slowly shook her head.

"Worse."

"David."

Mercer frowned.

"You know where he is?"

Sarah nodded.

"I've known for years."

"Then why didn't you tell us?"

She smiled sadly.

"Because every phone was monitored."

"Every email intercepted."

"Every message traced."

She looked around the chamber.

"This is the only place left where they couldn't hear us."

Samuel folded his arms.

"So tell us now."

Sarah took a deep breath.

"David isn't trying to save The Circle."

"He isn't trying to destroy it."

"He wants to inherit it."

Mercer nodded.

"That's what Ethan told us."

Sarah looked surprised.

"Then he's finally telling the truth."

Ethan quietly wiped away a tear.

"I should have listened to you years ago."

Sarah's expression softened just enough to show pity.

"But you listened eventually."

I looked around the underground room.

There were shelves filled with old journals.

Maps.

Boxes of documents.

Newspaper clippings dating back decades.

"This is where you've been hiding?"

Sarah smiled.

"No."

"This is where I've been working."

She walked toward one of the shelves.

Pulled down a large leather binder.

Inside were hundreds of photographs.

Every one showed powerful people meeting secretly.

Business executives.

Judges.

Politicians.

Corporate leaders.

"The Circle."

Sarah nodded.

"Every member."

Mercer slowly turned the pages.

"My God..."

"You identified all of them."

"Not all."

She pointed to several blank spaces.

"We never found the highest-ranking members."

Samuel frowned.

"Never?"

Sarah hesitated.

"There was one person who knew every name."

I looked at her.

"My father."

She nodded.

"Jonathan memorized everything."

"Where is he?"

The room became silent.

Sarah closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

My heart sank.

"You told Whitmore he was alive."

"He was."

She opened her eyes again.

"Until yesterday."

Mercer's expression changed immediately.

"What happened?"

Sarah looked toward the floor.

"I lost contact."

She reached into her jacket.

Removed a small satellite communicator.

"The last message I received came twelve hours ago."

She handed it to Mercer.

The screen displayed only three words.

David found me.

Nothing else.

No location.

No coordinates.

No reply.

I struggled to breathe.

"So..."

"My father could still be alive?"

Sarah reached for my hand.

"I believe he is."

"But we don't have much time."

Suddenly...

The lantern flickered.

Then went out.

The chamber plunged into darkness.

Someone cut the power.

Mercer immediately raised his flashlight.

"Everyone stay together!"

A loud metallic sound echoed through the tunnel.

Clang.

Clang.

Clang.

Samuel's face turned pale.

"They sealed the exits."

Another explosion shook the underground chamber.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

Sarah looked toward the tunnel entrance.

"They found us."

Mercer signaled the agents.

"Defensive positions!"

Red laser sights suddenly appeared on the stone walls.

One.

Three.

Five.

More than a dozen.

Snipers.

Watching every entrance.

A calm voice echoed through hidden speakers installed somewhere in the tunnel.

"Good evening."

I recognized it instantly.

David Lawson.

His voice sounded almost cheerful.

"I've been waiting a very long time for this reunion."

Sarah stepped protectively in front of me.

"Stay away from her."

David laughed.

"You still think this is about Emily?"

He sighed.

"It never was."

Mercer shouted,

"What do you want?"

David answered without hesitation.

"My brother."

Silence filled the chamber.

David continued.

"I know Jonathan is still alive."

"I know one of you knows where he is."

His tone became cold.

"And if I don't have my answer in the next five minutes..."

Another explosion echoed somewhere above us.

The ground trembled beneath our feet.

"...this entire mountain comes down."

No one spoke.

David's final words echoed through the darkness.

"You have exactly five minutes..."

"...to decide who survives."

At that moment, Sarah slowly reached into her pocket and placed a small folded piece of paper into my hand.

She whispered so quietly that only I could hear.

"If anything happens to me..."

"Don't let David find your father."

Then she looked into my eyes with heartbreaking determination.

May you like

"Because Jonathan isn't hiding from David..."

"He's protecting something David can never be allowed to possess."
