Chapter 11: The Cabin in the Pines

The command center erupted into motion.

"Prepare the helicopters."

"Notify Kentucky State Police."

"Call the FBI Louisville Field Office."

Detective Daniel Mercer issued orders one after another without raising his voice.

Within minutes, maps covered every table.

Satellite images of the Daniel Boone National Forest filled the large monitor.

Professor Caroline Hughes quietly placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"You don't have to go."

I looked at her.

"I've spent twenty-two years wondering who my parents really were."

I glanced back at Jonathan's frozen image on the screen.

"I'm not staying behind now."

Mercer overheard me.

"I was afraid you'd say that."

He sighed.

"Then you stay beside me."

"You don't leave my sight."

I nodded.

"I promise."

Three hours later, two Black Hawk helicopters lifted off from Louisville just before sunrise.

Rain clouds stretched across the Kentucky mountains.

The forest below seemed endless.

Miles of towering pine trees covered the landscape like a dark green ocean.

An FBI pilot pointed toward a valley.

"Target area is five minutes ahead."

Mercer studied the map.

"The cabin sits here."

He circled a narrow ridge.

"Only one road leads in."

"Any other access?"

"Old hiking trails."

"Abandoned logging roads."

He looked at me.

"If someone wanted to disappear..."

"This would be the perfect place."

The helicopters landed nearly a mile away to avoid being heard.

The tactical team continued on foot.

Twenty agents.

Two K-9 units.

Kentucky State Police.

FBI Hostage Rescue.

Mercer walked beside me while Margaret remained under protection with the second team.

The forest was unnaturally quiet.

No birds.

No insects.

Nothing.

One of the K-9 handlers stopped suddenly.

"My dog found something."

Everyone froze.

Hidden beneath wet leaves...

Lay fresh tire tracks.

Mercer crouched.

"Large SUV."

He touched the mud.

"Less than twelve hours old."

Another agent pointed toward broken branches.

"Multiple people."

"They weren't trying to hide their movement."

Mercer frowned.

"They wanted us to follow."

Thirty minutes later...

The cabin came into view.

It looked exactly like the video.

Small.

Wooden.

Surrounded by towering pines.

Smoke still drifted from the chimney.

Mercer raised his fist.

The team halted.

Snipers moved into position.

A drone quietly lifted into the air.

The operator watched the live feed.

"No heat signatures outside."

"What about inside?"

The operator zoomed in.

His expression changed.

"I've got one."

He looked confused.

"Only one?"

Mercer nodded.

"Move."

The tactical team surrounded the cabin.

One agent kicked the front door open.

"Federal agents!"

"Show me your hands!"

Silence.

They entered.

Room by room.

Kitchen.

Living room.

Bedroom.

Empty.

Only one person remained.

An elderly man sat calmly in a rocking chair beside the fireplace.

His white beard reached nearly to his chest.

He looked at the armed agents without the slightest hint of fear.

"I've been expecting you."

Mercer kept his weapon raised.

"Who are you?"

The old man smiled.

"My name is Samuel Reed."

"I've been taking care of this cabin."

He looked directly at me.

"And..."

"You must be Emily."

Every instinct told me he already knew exactly who I was.

The cabin contained almost nothing.

No computers.

No phones.

No luggage.

No signs of Jonathan or Sarah.

Only one pot of coffee still sat warm on the stove.

"They left recently," Mercer said.

Samuel nodded.

"Who left?"

He smiled.

"You already know."

Mercer stepped closer.

"Jonathan Lawson?"

Samuel nodded once.

"And Sarah."

My heart nearly stopped.

"They were here?"

"They've lived here on and off for years."

Tears filled my eyes.

"They were this close..."

Samuel looked at me kindly.

"They've always been close."

"You just couldn't see them."

Mercer frowned.

"Where did they go?"

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"I promised not to tell."

The room fell silent.

One federal agent stepped forward.

"Sir."

"This is a criminal investigation."

Samuel smiled again.

"I know."

"I helped investigate it."

Everyone looked at him.

"What?"

The old man stood with surprising ease.

He walked to the fireplace.

Reached behind a loose stone.

And removed an old leather badge wallet.

He handed it to Mercer.

The detective opened it.

His eyes widened.

Retired Special Agent

Samuel Reed

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Mercer stared at him.

"You were FBI?"

"For thirty-eight years."

Samuel nodded.

"I was Jonathan Lawson's handler."

The room went completely still.

Samuel motioned for everyone to sit.

"I suppose it's finally time."

He looked at me.

"Your parents weren't running."

"They were working."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"For twenty-three years..."

"They've been gathering evidence."

He pointed toward the forest outside.

"Richard Bennett wasn't the leader."

"We already know that."

Samuel smiled.

"No."

"You don't."

He looked at Mercer.

"You think Charles Whitmore runs everything."

Mercer nodded.

"He does."

Samuel slowly shook his head.

"No."

"Whitmore reports to someone else."

A heavy silence settled over the cabin.

Another person?

Another leader?

Samuel sighed.

"The organization has existed for nearly fifty years."

"It controls corporations."

"Political campaigns."

"International investments."

"They call themselves..."

He hesitated.

"...The Circle."

Mercer immediately recognized the name.

"I've seen that before."

Samuel nodded.

"You've seen their symbol."

"The small phoenix inside a circle."

My mind raced.

The symbol...

I'd seen it somewhere.

Then I remembered.

The silver locket.

My mother's necklace.

It hadn't contained a heart at all.

It had been...

A tiny phoenix enclosed within a circle.

I looked at Samuel.

"My mother's locket."

He nodded.

"It wasn't jewelry."

"It was a warning."

Before anyone could ask another question...

One of the agents rushed inside carrying a satellite phone.

"Detective!"

Mercer answered immediately.

"What is it?"

The agent's face turned pale.

"It's headquarters."

Mercer listened for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

His expression darkened.

"What happened?" I asked.

"The command center was attacked."

Every person in the cabin froze.

"Margaret?"

Mercer nodded.

"Alive."

"Professor Hughes?"

"Safe."

"The evidence?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Finally, he looked at me.

"They took the black flash drive."

The room fell silent.

"But..."

I whispered.

"The silver one is still hidden here."

Samuel looked at me with surprise.

"You know about the second drive?"

I nodded.

"We saw it in Whitmore's video."

Samuel smiled sadly.

"Then we're already too late."

He walked to the fireplace.

Removed the loose stone shown in the video.

Reached inside.

His hand came back...

Empty.

No silver flash drive.

Only a folded piece of paper.

Samuel unfolded it slowly.

His face lost all color.

"What is it?" Mercer asked.

He handed me the note.

It contained only one sentence.

Thank you for bringing Emily to us.

At the bottom...

A fresh signature.

— David

Outside...

A single gunshot echoed through the forest.

Then another.

Then the unmistakable roar of helicopter blades.

Someone had found the cabin.

May you like

And this time...

They knew exactly who was inside.
