Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Wanted to See

Chapter 1: The Footage Nobody Wanted to See
"Check the cameras before you say another word!"
Emily's voice thundered through the ballroom.
Every guest froze.
Her daughter Lily buried her tear-stained face against her mother's shoulder while blood continued to trickle from the cut above her eyebrow.
The groom's older brother, Daniel Mercer, tightened his grip on the broken wooden frame.
"I don't need cameras," he snapped. "I watched her steal my grandfather's diamond brooch."
"You watched?" Emily shot back. "Or you assumed because she's eight years old and standing near your gift table?"
Daniel opened his mouth but couldn't answer.
Within seconds, hotel security rushed into the hall.
One guard knelt beside Lily.
Another stepped between Emily and Daniel before the confrontation turned violent again.
"The child needs a hospital," the medic said quietly.
Emily nodded but refused to move.
"Not until the cameras are checked."
The wedding planner hesitated.
"Mrs. Mercer...the security office can access every hallway and ballroom."
Daniel laughed.
"Fine."
His confidence spread through the room.
Several relatives nodded.
"If she's innocent," one aunt whispered, "the cameras will prove it."
"If she's guilty," another replied, "the mother owes everyone an apology."
Emily didn't respond.
She simply kissed Lily's forehead.
"You don't have to be scared anymore."
Ten minutes later...
Nearly forty guests crowded into the hotel's security room.
The manager loaded the footage onto a large monitor.
The recording showed Lily wandering toward the gift table.
Daniel folded his arms smugly.
"There."
"Keep playing," Emily said.
The video continued.
Lily wasn't reaching for gifts.
She had spotted something glittering beneath the tablecloth.
The tiny girl crouched down.
She picked up the antique diamond brooch.
Instead of hiding it...
She looked around, confused.
Then she walked straight toward Daniel.
At that exact second...
A waiter carrying a tower of champagne glasses stumbled between them.
Daniel turned away.
Lily called after him.
"Sir..."
He never heard her.
Unsure what to do, she placed the brooch carefully on the nearby welcome display so an adult could find it.
Then she walked away.
Silence filled the security room.
Emily slowly looked at Daniel.
"My daughter was trying to return your family's jewelry."
Nobody spoke.
But the footage wasn't finished.
The manager frowned.
"There are three more camera angles."
May you like
And suddenly...
Daniel's face lost all its color.
