Chapter 2: The Trap Springs

The steel door echoed shut behind him.

A satisfied grin spread across the husband's face as he slipped his hands into the pockets of his gray pea coat. Years of manipulation, lies, and carefully crafted alibis had finally led to this moment. No witnesses. No evidence. Just an unfortunate "freezer malfunction."

"It's finally over," he whispered as he walked down the dim industrial hallway.

Behind him, hidden beneath layers of frost, Evelant calmly pressed her gloved hand against a frozen ventilation panel. The smile on her face never faded.

She wasn't trapped.

She was waiting.

Inside her coat rested a small black transmitter connected to a system she had secretly installed weeks earlier. Every insult, every betrayal, every attempt on her life had convinced her that one day he would make his final move.

She simply made sure it wouldn't be his last move alone.

Her thumb pressed the button.

A soft click echoed through the building.

Far above the freezer, magnetic locks slammed shut throughout the warehouse.

Emergency steel doors sealed every exit.

The lights flickered once.

Then darkness swallowed the corridor.

The husband froze.

"What the..."

Red emergency lights suddenly illuminated the hallway, bathing everything in crimson.

An automated voice echoed through the speakers.

"Security lockdown initiated."

His confident smile disappeared.

Back inside the freezer, Evelant looked directly into the security camera.

"Now... it's your turn."

For the first time in years, she wasn't afraid.

He was.
