Mr. Hall didn’t leave immediately. Instead, he walked through the silent ballroom like a judge moving through a courtroom after the verdict.
He stopped near the woman in the black gown.
Up close, she could no longer hide behind arrogance. Her lips trembled as she tried to speak, but nothing came out.
“You judged me in under ten seconds,” he said quietly. “That says more about your world than it does about mine.”
She finally whispered, “I… I didn’t know who you were.”
Mr. Hall gave a faint, almost sad smile.
“That was the point.”
He turned away, then gestured toward the young waiter.
“You,” he said.
The waiter stiffened. “Sir?”
“You were the only one who didn’t ask what I was worth before deciding how to treat me.”
The room shifted again. This time, it wasn’t shock—it was realization.
Mr. Hall reached into his coat and pulled out a sealed document.
“This foundation doesn’t need applause,” he said. “It needs correction.”
