Chapter 3: The House Remembers

Chapter 3: The House Remembers
By midnight, Whitmore Estate felt less like a mansion and more like a courtroom.
Police detectives searched every floor.
Lawyers filled the library.
Family members whispered in corners.
Vivian remained perfectly composed.
"There are no cameras near the staircase," she repeated.
"The system was designed for privacy."
Nathaniel nodded slowly.
"So I was told."
He disappeared into his mother's private study.
Few people had ever entered the room.
Margaret valued records.
Every contract.
Every receipt.
Every family secret.
Inside an old mahogany desk, Nathaniel found a handwritten note.
It was addressed to him.
If you're reading this, someone has finally become desperate enough to hurt me.
His heartbeat quickened.
Beneath the letter rested a small brass key.
It opened a cabinet hidden behind an oil painting.
Inside sat an independent security server.
Not connected to the estate's visible system.
Margaret had secretly installed it months earlier.
She had trusted almost no one.
Including Vivian.
Nathaniel inserted the drive.
The monitor flickered to life.
Time stamp:
7:13:42 p.m.
The staircase appeared.
Margaret slowly climbed the steps using her cane.
Vivian approached from behind.
They exchanged words.
There was no audio.
But body language needed none.
Margaret turned away.
Vivian grabbed the cane.
Yanked it sideways.
Margaret stumbled.
Reached for the railing.
Vivian looked around.
Then placed both hands firmly against Margaret's back.
One shove.
Not large.
Not dramatic.
Just enough.
Gravity did the rest.
Nathaniel watched his mother disappear down twenty-one marble steps.
His breathing stopped.
The recording continued.
Vivian calmly adjusted her dress.
Counted silently.
Then screamed.
Nathaniel closed his eyes.
Every warning his mother had ever given him suddenly made sense.
When detectives viewed the footage an hour later, no one spoke until it ended.
One officer finally broke the silence.
"This wasn't an accident."
"No," Nathaniel answered.
May you like
"It was attempted murder."
Across the room, Vivian realized the story she had carefully constructed had collapsed forever.
