Chapter 2: The Witness No One Expected

Chapter 2: The Witness No One Expected
No one spoke.
For several long seconds, the grand staircase held everyone in place as though time itself had stopped climbing.
The little girl stood on the landing, hugging her faded stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Her name was Sofia Delgado.
Rosa's daughter.
She had come to the estate after preschool because Rosa's babysitter had canceled. Margaret Whitmore had insisted it wasn't a problem.
"Children deserve kindness," the elderly matriarch had often said.
Vivian looked at the child with a smile so gentle it almost appeared maternal.
"Oh, sweetheart," she said softly. "You must have dreamed it."
Sofia slowly shook her head.
"I didn't."
Nathaniel Whitmore finally arrived from the west wing, still wearing his suit jacket from a board meeting.
His eyes landed first on his unconscious mother.
Then on Vivian.
Then on Rosa being restrained by security.
"What happened?"
Vivian rushed toward him, tears already forming.
"Your mother slipped. Rosa panicked. And now her little girl is confused."
Nathaniel frowned.
"My mother slipped?"
"Yes."
Sofia interrupted.
"No."
Every adult looked at her again.
"The pretty lady touched Grandma's stick."
Nathaniel's expression hardened.
"What do you mean?"
Sofia pointed toward the staircase.
"Grandma was walking slow."
She demonstrated with tiny careful steps.
"The pretty lady got mad."
Another step.
"She pushed the stick."
The child's little hands mimicked a quick shove.
"Grandma tried to catch it."
Sofia swallowed.
"Then the pretty lady pushed Grandma."
The entire foyer became unbearably quiet.
Vivian laughed.
A tiny laugh.
Almost effortless.
"This is ridiculous. She's three years old."
Nathaniel looked toward security.
"Release Rosa."
The guards hesitated.
"Now."
They immediately stepped back.
Rosa rushed to her daughter, wrapping trembling arms around her.
"You don't have to say anything else, sweetheart."
But Sofia continued.
"I hid."
"Why?"
"Because the pretty lady looked scary."
Nathaniel slowly turned toward Vivian.
For the first time since their engagement...
he wasn't looking at her with love.
He was looking at her with questions.
Before anyone could speak again, paramedics burst through the front entrance.
Margaret still had a pulse.
Barely.
As they carried her away, her weak fingers brushed against Nathaniel's hand.
She whispered only one word.
"...camera..."
Then she lost consciousness again.
Nathaniel stared after the ambulance.
There had never been cameras facing the grand staircase.

At least...
that's what everyone believed.
