CHAPTER 2 — “THE WOMAN HE NEVER TOLD THEM ABOUT”

Outside the ER, the grandfather sat on a metal chair, head lowered.
His hands trembled uncontrollably.
And then—footsteps.
A woman in a dark coat appeared at the hallway entrance. Pale face. Red eyes. Like she had been crying for hours… or years.
She stopped when she saw him.
“You… came back,” she whispered.
The grandfather didn’t look up.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
Her voice cracked.
“You always had a choice.”
Inside the ER glass window, Michael was visible—moving fast, saving the child, unaware of the storm outside.
The woman’s eyes locked on him.
“He never knew?” she asked quietly.
The grandfather finally spoke.
“I thought I was protecting him.”
A bitter laugh escaped her lips.
“You destroyed him instead.”
Silence fell between them.
Inside, the monitor alarm suddenly spiked.
Michael turned sharply toward the door, as if he felt something beyond medicine.

A son who never knew.
And a child paying for the truth.
