CHAPTER 1 — “THE TRUTH IN THE ER LIGHT”

The emergency doors slammed open.

“Clear the way! Pediatric critical case!”

Nurses rushed the little girl inside, wires and monitors quickly attaching to her fragile body. The grandfather followed instinctively—but a nurse stopped him at the entrance.

“You can’t go in there.”

His knees nearly gave out.

Inside the ER, Michael stood frozen for half a second longer than a doctor ever should.

“She… is yours.”

Those words kept repeating in his mind like a broken monitor alarm.

He forced himself to move.

“Vitals?” he snapped, voice sharp again, mask returning.

“Heart rate 168. Temperature 40.2. Possible sepsis.”

But his hands… hesitated for a fraction of a second before touching her arm.

That hesitation was dangerous in a doctor.

And unforgivable in a father.

The girl suddenly whispered weakly:

“Daddy…”

Michael’s breath stopped.

The monitor beeped louder.

He closed his eyes for one brief moment—then regained control.

“Start IV fluids. Now. Full septic protocol.”

But his voice was no longer just professional.

It was shaking underneath.
