Chapter 2 – Behind the Closed Bedroom Door
Adrian let the silence settle before speaking again.
"Take me to my father."
Celeste stepped into his path.
"He's sleeping. The doctor said he needs uninterrupted rest."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"Move."
For a long moment, neither of them moved. Then Graham quietly stepped beside Adrian, and Celeste realized she was outnumbered.
She stepped aside.
Harold Vale's bedroom overlooked Central Park. The curtains were half drawn, leaving the room dim despite the afternoon light. Harold lay motionless in bed, thinner than Adrian remembered. His breathing was shallow, and an untouched lunch tray sat on a nearby table.
Adrian walked to the bed.
"Dad?"
Harold's eyes slowly opened.

"Adrian..."
His voice was barely a whisper.
Adrian squeezed his father's hand.
"I'm here."
Harold glanced nervously toward the bedroom door before whispering even more softly.
"Don't leave Mara alone."
Adrian looked back at Graham.

Graham had heard it too.
Neither man said a word.
