Chapter 7: The Greenhouse Key

Chapter 7: The Greenhouse Key

The gunshot echoed across the estate.

Then came Esteban's scream.

"Help!"

Valeria didn't hesitate.

She tightened her grip on the brass key and ran out of the library, racing through the back hallway toward the gardens. Behind her, doors flew open as servants and guards rushed into the corridors.

"What happened?"

"Where did the shot come from?"

"The greenhouse!" someone shouted.

Valeria reached the stone path just as Alejandro emerged from the opposite side of the mansion, two armed guards at his heels.

"Stay behind us!" one of the guards yelled.

But Valeria kept running.

The old greenhouse stood at the far end of Elena's rose garden. Once filled with exotic orchids and rare plants, it had been abandoned after Elena's death. Ivy climbed the glass walls, and several broken panes had been patched with weathered boards.

The front door hung open.

Alejandro arrived only seconds behind her.

"Clear the building!" he ordered.

The guards entered first, weapons drawn.

"It's clear!"

Valeria stepped inside.

The air smelled of damp soil and fresh gunpowder.

Flowerpots lay shattered across the floor.

A trail of blood led toward the rear wall.

"Esteban!" Valeria called.

A weak voice answered.

"Over... here..."

They found the old gardener slumped behind a workbench, clutching his left shoulder. Blood seeped through his shirt, but the wound didn't appear fatal.

Valeria dropped to her knees.

"We need pressure."

She tore a strip from her apron and pressed it firmly against the wound.

Esteban winced.

"They... missed my heart."

Alejandro crouched beside him.

"Who did this?"

Esteban struggled to breathe.

"I never... saw his face..."

"Did he say anything?"

The old man nodded weakly.

"He wanted... the key."

Valeria instinctively slipped her hand into her pocket.

The brass key.

She hadn't shown it to anyone.

Alejandro noticed the movement.

"What key?"

Before Valeria could answer, Esteban looked directly at her.

His eyes were filled with urgency.

"Don't..."

He coughed painfully.

"...don't let him..."

His voice faded.

"Esteban?"

The old gardener lost consciousness.

"Get him to the hospital!" Alejandro ordered.

The guards carefully lifted Esteban onto a stretcher and rushed him outside.

As the ambulance disappeared through the front gates, Alejandro turned to Valeria.

"What key was he talking about?"

Valeria hesitated.

She remembered Elena's warning.

Don't tell Alejandro until you know who.

She hated keeping secrets from him.

But Elena had written those words for a reason.

"I'm not sure," she answered carefully.

Alejandro studied her face.

He could tell she wasn't telling him everything.

Yet something stopped him from pressing further.

Instead, he nodded.

"If you remember anything... tell me immediately."

"I will."

It wasn't entirely a lie.

She intended to tell him.

Just not yet.

That afternoon, Mateo refused to leave Valeria's side.

He followed her through the kitchen.

The hallways.

Even the laundry room.

Whenever she disappeared for more than a minute, he became anxious until he found her again.

Doña Socorro smiled sadly.

"He's afraid you'll disappear too."

Valeria gently stroked Mateo's hair.

"I'm not going anywhere."

The little boy looked into her eyes.

Then, without warning, he tugged on her hand.

He wanted her to follow him.

Again.

He led her upstairs.

Past his bedroom.

Past Elena's preserved room.

This time, he stopped outside the old greenhouse entrance that connected directly to the north wing through a forgotten service corridor.

He pointed toward the brass key in her pocket.

Then toward a rusted metal cabinet built into the wall.

Valeria carefully removed the key.

It fit perfectly.

Click.

The cabinet door swung open.

Inside was an old blueprint of the estate.

Hidden passages.

Service tunnels.

Storage rooms.

Several areas had been marked in red ink by hand.

One location was circled three times.

East Greenhouse Cellar

Below it, Elena had written:

Only if I fail.

Valeria's heartbeat quickened.

There was a cellar beneath the greenhouse.

She had never noticed it.

Mateo suddenly pointed to another mark on the blueprint.

A small symbol.

A star.

It matched the engraving on his mother's journal.

"He remembers," Valeria whispered.

Doña Socorro looked over her shoulder.

"No..."

"What?"

"I've seen that symbol before."

"Where?"

The old housekeeper's face slowly turned pale.

"On Elena's wedding ring."

That evening, Alejandro gathered his senior staff in the conference room.

"The person responsible for attacking Esteban is still on this property."

His voice was cold.

"No one leaves the estate without my approval."

Ricardo Salazar leaned back calmly in his chair.

"Perhaps we're overreacting."

Alejandro looked at him.

"Someone shot an unarmed man inside my home."

Ricardo folded his hands.

"And yet nothing was stolen."

Valeria quietly watched him from the doorway.

Nothing was stolen?

He couldn't possibly know that.

Unless...

He had been looking for something.

The brass key.

Ricardo suddenly noticed Valeria watching him.

He smiled politely.

"Miss Gómez."

She nodded.

"Mr. Salazar."

His eyes briefly dropped toward the pocket of her apron.

Only for a second.

But she noticed.

So did Doña Socorro.

Late that night, after everyone had gone to bed, Valeria quietly slipped outside.

She carried only a flashlight.

The blueprint.

And the brass key.

She crossed the moonlit garden until she reached the abandoned greenhouse.

Everything was silent.

She searched the cracked stone floor exactly where the blueprint indicated.

Nothing.

Then she noticed one loose paving stone beneath an old wooden bench.

She knelt and pushed it aside.

A rusted iron ring appeared.

With all her strength, she pulled.

The stone hatch slowly lifted.

Cold air rushed upward.

A narrow staircase disappeared into darkness.

The greenhouse cellar.

Valeria switched on her flashlight.

Just as she placed one foot on the first step...

A voice behind her quietly said,

"I wouldn't go down there alone."

She spun around.

Alejandro stood in the doorway.

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't holding a weapon.

He simply looked at the open hatch.

Then at the blueprint in her hands.

Finally, his eyes settled on the brass key.

"You found something."

Valeria realized she could no longer keep Elena's secret from him.

She took a slow breath.

"Yes."

Alejandro stepped closer.

Then, to her surprise, he spoke softly.

"I'm done hiding from my wife's past."

He extended his hand.

"Let's find out what she died trying to protect."

Together, they looked down into the darkness below.

Neither of them noticed the figure hidden behind the greenhouse's broken glass.

Watching.

Listening.

Holding a silenced pistol.

Waiting for the perfect moment to make sure neither of them ever came back out.
