Chapter 16: The Hidden Truth

Chapter 16: The Hidden Truth
Mateo's scream echoed through the darkened mansion.
"Mateo!"
Alejandro sprinted toward the staircase before anyone could stop him.
Valeria ran beside him.
The emergency lights flickered weakly, bathing the halls in a dim red glow.
Security guards rushed in every direction, shouting orders over their radios.
"North wing clear!"

"Seal every exit!"
"No one's leaving this property!"
Alejandro ignored them all.
His only focus was his son.
They reached Mateo's bedroom.
The door stood open.
The room was empty.
Alejandro's heart stopped.
"Mateo!"
Then a small voice answered from inside the closet.
"Daddy..."
Alejandro rushed over and pulled the door open.
Mateo was curled into a ball, hugging his stuffed rabbit.
He threw himself into his father's arms.
Alejandro held him tightly.
"I'm here."
"No one's going to hurt you."
Valeria knelt beside them.
"It's okay."
The little boy slowly looked up.
He pointed toward the hallway.
"Man."
"What man?" Alejandro asked gently.
"The... watch."
Alejandro looked toward the doorway.
Whoever had entered the room had already disappeared.
Outside, Javier examined the security system.
"This wasn't a power failure."
He removed a damaged circuit board from the control panel.
"It was sabotage."
One of the technicians hurried over.
"We found this."
He handed Javier a tiny electronic device.
"A signal jammer."
Javier frowned.
"Military grade."
"It disabled the generators and the cameras at the same time."
Alejandro joined them moments later.
"What about the surveillance recordings?"
Javier shook his head.
"Everything from the last twenty minutes has been erased."
Valeria looked at the damaged equipment.
"They didn't come to kidnap Mateo."
Alejandro frowned.
"Then why risk coming here?"
Valeria's eyes narrowed.
"They wanted to search the mansion while everyone was distracted."
The realization struck them all at once.
"The greenhouse," Alejandro said.
They ran.
The hidden cellar beneath the greenhouse looked untouched.
At first.
Then Valeria noticed the steel filing cabinet standing slightly open.
She immediately searched the shelves.
Most of the boxes remained exactly where they had been.
Until she reached Elena's private cabinet.
The envelope addressed to Mateo was gone.
Alejandro stared at the empty shelf.
"They took it."
Valeria slowly shook her head.
"No."
She pointed lower.
"They searched for it."
"But they missed something."
Hidden beneath the false bottom of the cabinet lay a small wooden box.
Its surface was carved with the same star symbol found throughout Elena's journal.
Inside rested a single key.
Not brass.
Silver.
Alongside it was another sealed letter.
This one addressed to Valeria.
Her hands trembled.
"She knew..."
Alejandro looked at her.
"Knew what?"
"She knew someone else would continue her search."
Valeria carefully opened the envelope.
The letter began:
Valeria,
If you're reading this, then you've earned my trust, even though we may never have met.
Valeria's breath caught.
She continued reading aloud.
There is one secret I couldn't write in my journal because I knew it would be stolen.
The truth isn't hidden in this house.
It's hidden beneath the place where Mateo first learned to laugh.
Everyone looked at one another.
Mateo first learned to laugh?
Alejandro frowned.
"The playground?"
Valeria slowly shook her head.
"No."
Doña Socorro smiled sadly.
"It wasn't a playground."
"It was the small ranch."
Doña Socorro explained.
Before Alejandro's businesses had made him one of the wealthiest men in northern Mexico, he and Elena often escaped to a quiet ranch outside Monterrey.
There were horses.
A small lake.
An old oak tree.
It was the only place where business never followed them.
Mateo had taken his first steps there.
Spoken his first words there.
Learned to laugh there.
Alejandro smiled faintly through his sadness.
"I haven't been back since Elena died."
Valeria looked at the silver key.
"I think we're about to."
Early the next morning, Alejandro decided to leave immediately.
Only four people would know the destination.
Alejandro.
Valeria.
Javier.
Doña Socorro.
Mateo insisted on coming.
"I won't leave him behind," Alejandro said.
A convoy would attract attention.
Instead, they took two ordinary pickup trucks.
No family insignia.
No obvious security detail.
Just enough trusted guards to protect them.
Three hours later, they reached the ranch.
Time seemed frozen there.
The wooden house remained exactly as Elena had left it.
Wildflowers covered the fields.
The lake shimmered beneath the morning sun.
Mateo quietly smiled.
"I remember."
It was the longest sentence he had spoken since his mother's death.
Valeria squeezed his hand.
"We're going to find what your mom left for you."
They searched the property for nearly two hours.
The barn.
The stable.
The lake.
Nothing.
Finally, Mateo walked toward the old oak tree.
Without saying a word, he knelt and touched the ground beneath the wooden swing Elena had once pushed him on.
Valeria remembered the letter.
Beneath the place where Mateo first learned to laugh.
She looked at Alejandro.
"I think this is it."
The guards carefully began digging.
Less than two feet below the surface...
Their shovel struck metal.
A weatherproof steel case.
Alejandro lifted it out with both hands.
The silver key fit perfectly into its lock.
Inside lay dozens of documents.
Several flash drives.
Family photographs.
And one thick envelope labeled:
The Complete Truth
Before anyone could open it—
The sound of helicopter blades echoed overhead.
Everyone looked up.
A black helicopter circled low above the ranch.
Javier's face turned pale.
"How did they find us?"
Alejandro's expression hardened.
"They didn't."
He slowly looked toward the members of his own security team.
Someone had revealed their location.
One of the guards suddenly raised his rifle.
Not toward the sky.
Toward Alejandro.
"I’m sorry, boss."
His voice trembled.
"They have my family."
The other guards spun around in shock.
Before anyone could react—
A single shot rang out.
The loyal guard collapsed to the ground.
Blood spread across his shirt.
The bullet hadn't come from his rifle.
It had come from the helicopter above.
A sniper had silenced him before he could reveal the traitor's name.
The helicopter banked sharply and disappeared over the mountains.
The dying guard reached weakly toward Alejandro.
With his final breath, he whispered just one word:
May you like
"...Gabriel..."
Then he was gone.
