Chapter 2 – The Photograph That Changed Everything

Richard carefully unfolded the old photograph.
Time had faded the colors, but the faces were unmistakable.
A younger Richard stood beside Eleanor in the garden of the original Whitmore estate.
Eleanor was smiling.
She was visibly pregnant.
Written on the back in Eleanor's handwriting were six words:
"If you're reading this, I survived."
Richard's hands began to shake.
Below the sentence was another message.
"They lied to both of us.
Victoria paid someone to set the fire.
She wanted the Whitmore fortune.
If our daughter ever finds you, believe her."
Silence swept through the ballroom.
Every guest stared at Victoria.
She backed away slowly.
"That's fake."
Richard looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
He remembered.
The night of the fire...
Victoria had insisted Eleanor was trapped inside.
She had been the one who identified the burned body.
There had never been a DNA test.
Only Victoria's word.
Sophie's voice trembled.
"My mom told me she woke up in a hospital with no memory for months."
"When she finally remembered everything... she was too afraid to come back."
"She thought someone would kill us."
Richard's eyes filled with tears.
"She was right."
Victoria suddenly shouted,
"None of this proves anything!"
Richard pressed a button beneath the dining table.
Within seconds, the mansion's chief of security entered.
"So did you destroy the security archives?" Richard asked.
The man hesitated.
"No, sir."
"I kept backup copies."
Victoria's face drained of color.
"The recordings from twenty-two years ago still exist."
Richard turned toward his attorney, who had been standing quietly among the guests.
"Call the police."
Victoria tried to run.
She never reached the front door.
Security stopped her before she took another step.
As officers arrived, Richard looked at Sophie with tears streaming down his face.
"I failed your mother."
Sophie softly replied,
"You didn't know."
May you like
"No."
"But I'll spend the rest of my life making sure I never fail you."
