Chapter 1 – The Bracelet No One Could Explain

The grand ballroom fell into complete silence.
Crystal shards glittered across the polished marble floor, but no one looked at the broken glasses anymore.
Every eye was fixed on the thin silver bracelet around Sophie's wrist.
Richard Whitmore's face had turned ghostly pale.
"Where did you get that bracelet?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Sophie instinctively covered it with her other hand.
"It belonged to my mom."
Victoria laughed nervously.
"Oh, Richard, it's just some cheap flea-market jewelry. You're frightening the guests."
Richard didn't even look at his wife.
"Answer me, Sophie."
"My mother gave it to me before she died," Sophie said. "She told me never to sell it... and never to let anyone take it away."
Richard slowly reached toward the bracelet.
On the inside, nearly worn away by time, was an engraving.
For our daughter. Forever. — R & E
His knees nearly gave out.
Only two people in the world knew those initials.
Richard...
...and Eleanor.
Twenty-two years earlier, Eleanor Whitmore had disappeared after a terrible fire destroyed the family's original estate.
Everyone believed she had died.
Everyone except Richard.
He had searched for years.
He hired investigators.
He spent millions.
Nothing.
Until today.
Victoria suddenly stepped between them.
"This is ridiculous," she snapped. "Security, remove the girl immediately."
Richard's voice thundered through the mansion.
"No one touches her."
The room froze.
Guests exchanged confused glances.
Victoria forced a smile.
"Richard... she's just a servant."
"No," he answered quietly.
"I think she's the answer I've been waiting for for twenty-two years."
Sophie stared at him, completely confused.
"I don't understand."
Richard swallowed hard.
"Did your mother ever tell you who your father was?"
Sophie slowly shook her head.
"She only said... he never knew I existed."
Richard closed his eyes.
His heart was pounding harder than it had in decades.
Then he noticed the corner of an old photograph sticking out of Sophie's apron pocket.
"What's that?"
Sophie pulled out the faded photograph.
"I've never opened it."
"My mom told me to wait until someone recognized the bracelet."
Victoria suddenly lunged toward the photograph.
"Give me that!"
Before she could grab it, Richard caught her wrist.
His eyes narrowed.
"Why are you so desperate to stop her?"

For the first time in twenty years...
Victoria had no answer.
