Chapter 1: The Bracelet That Shouldn't Exist

Silence swallowed the grand dining hall.

Richard Ashford's fingers tightened around Victoria's wrist so suddenly that everyone froze.

"Enough."

His voice was low, but every servant knew that tone. It was the voice that had built the Ashford empire from nothing. The voice that never needed to be repeated.

Victoria stared at him in disbelief.

"Richard... you're hurting me."

He ignored her.

His eyes never left the faded silver bracelet wrapped around Sophie's tiny wrist.

The engraving.

The tiny rose.

The missing sapphire.

His breathing became uneven.

Impossible.

That bracelet had disappeared twenty-two years ago.

Along with the little girl who had vanished during the fire at the old Ashford estate.

Sophie looked down nervously.

"I'm... I'm sorry, sir."

Richard slowly knelt in front of her.

Every guest gasped.

One of the richest men in New York had never knelt before anyone.

"What is your name?"

"Sophie."

"Your full name?"

She hesitated.

"My mother said... we never needed a last name."

Victoria's face drained of color.

Richard's heartbeat pounded inside his ears.

"No last name..."

Exactly like the police report.

Exactly like the missing child.

He carefully touched the bracelet.

"Who gave this to you?"

"My mommy."

"Where is she?"

Sophie's eyes filled with tears.

"She died last winter."

Richard felt the room spin.

The child standing before him suddenly seemed painfully familiar.

Those gray eyes.

May you like

That stubborn little chin.

The same eyes staring back at him from every old family portrait hidden upstairs.
