Chapter 1: The Watch That Shouldn't Exist

Chapter 1: The Watch That Shouldn't Exist
The traffic noise seemed to disappear.
Sophia Langford stared at the tiny engraving as though the words themselves had reached into her memory and pulled loose something she had buried years ago.
"Subject separation authorized."
"No..." she whispered again. "That file was destroyed."
Her son, Ethan, looked from the pocket watch to the barefoot boy.
"Mom... who's he?"
Before Sophia could answer, the other boy spoke.
"My name is Noah."
His voice sounded almost identical to Ethan's.
Even the way he pronounced certain words matched.
Sophia felt her knees weaken.
Twenty years ago, her husband, Dr. Adrian Langford, had led a privately funded genetics research program. Officially, it focused on premature infant survival. Unofficially, a classified division studied identical twins to understand how environment shaped intelligence, empathy, and personality.
Sophia had given birth to twin boys.
She remembered holding them both.
She remembered kissing them both.
Then the anesthetic had pulled her into darkness.
When she woke up, the doctors told her only one baby had survived.
She had spent years mourning the son she believed she'd lost.
Now one of those "dead" children stood barefoot across from her.
She looked directly into Noah's eyes.
"Who gave you that watch?"
"My grandfather."
Sophia froze.
"My grandfather said my father made him promise to keep it hidden until I turned twelve."
"Where is your grandfather?"
Noah lowered his head.
"He died three weeks ago."
"And before he died?"
"He told me to find the woman in the picture."
He pointed gently toward Sophia.
"He said she'd recognize the watch."
Tears filled Sophia's eyes.
Ethan quietly stepped beside Noah.
Neither boy spoke.
Neither needed to.

For the first time in their lives...
The twins stood together.
